Job summary

Socket.dev is seeking a qualified System Safety Engineer for a DoD-focused program in the Warner Robins, GA area. The role emphasizes risk assessment, hazard analyses, and safety program development in alignment with MIL-STD-882 and AFI 91-202.

Responsibilities include hazard management, Mishap investigations support, and collaboration with AF Safety Center and program prime contractor representatives. An ABET-accredited engineering background is required, with DoD experience and clearance

Qualifications

• Advanced degree (MA/MS) with 12+ years of experience in the respective discipline, 5 in the DoD.
• BA/BS with 15+ years of experience in the discipline, 5 in the DoD.
• 20 years of directly related experience with proper certifications, 8 in the DoD.

Responsibilities

• Conduct system safety engineering tasks and risk assessments for safe operation and maintenance.
• Develop and review system safety program plans and hazard analyses per MIL-STD-882, AFI 91-202, AFMC supplements.
• Manage hazard tracking logs and close out hazards until aircraft modifications are completed.
• Organize and present briefing materials for system safety group meetings; co-chair meetings with AF chief engineer and prime contractor representative.
• Participate in mishap investigations and report findings to the Air Force Safety Center.
• Attend system safety working group meetings and support deviations, waivers, and CCB meetings.
• Evaluate ECPs/CCPs, TO modifications, and airworthiness documentation for hazard analyses and OSS&E safety.

Job description

Responsibilities

• Risk Assessment & Safety Program Support:
• Conduct system safety engineering tasks, including risk assessments to ensure all procured systems are safe to operate and maintain.
• Assist in the development and review of system safety program plans and hazard analyses in accordance with MIL-STD-882, AFI 91-202, and relevant AFMC supplements.
• Hazard Management:
• Establish and utilize hazard tracking logs to monitor and close out hazards until all aircraft or documentation modifications are completed.
• Maintain a file of all current mishap risk assessments and annually submit risk acceptance packages for risks designated as "high" or "serious".
• Safety Group Meetings:
• Organize, generate, and present briefing materials for system safety group meetings.
• Co-chair meetings alongside the AF chief engineer and program's prime contractor representative.
• Mishap Investigation & Reporting:
• Participate in mishap investigations and respond to findings and recommendations in mishap reports.
• Collaborate with functional disciplines to develop and report solutions to the Air Force Safety Center.
• Safety Working Groups & Technical Reviews:
• Attend system safety working group meetings to address specific safety issues.
• Support requests for deviations, waivers, and Configuration Control Board (CCB) meetings to safeguard aircraft systems.
• Engineering Change Proposals (ECPs) & Compliance:
• Evaluate ECPs, CCPs, TO modifications, and proposals related to hazard analyses and airworthiness documentation.
• Identify safety non-compliances regarding airworthiness and Operational Safety, Suitability, and Effectiveness (OSS&E).
• Documentation & Safety Recommendations:
• Update program safety recommendations in the Air Force Safety Automated System (AFSAS) bi-annually.
• Assist in maintaining an up-to-date crisis management team roster and participate in crisis management team meetings.

Minimum Requirements

Education

• Advanced Degree (Master of Arts (MA) / Master of Science (MS)) and twelve (12) years of experience in the respective technical / professional discipline being performed, five (5) years of which must be in the DoD
• OR, BA/BS degree, and fifteen (15) years of experience in the respective technical/professional discipline being performed, five (5) of which must be in the DoD
• OR, twenty (20) years of directly related experience with proper certifications as described in the Functionally Aligned Job Descriptions, eight (8) of which must be in the DoD.
• U.S. Citizenship required; Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance at the required level

Additional Engineering/Computer Science Education Requirements

• Engineering positions, require successful completion of an undergraduate degree with a major in engineering from a college or university with an Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited engineering program(s) for the degree requirements of the position (e.g. electrical, mechanical, aerospace). Degrees in engineering from a non-accredited ABET program are not considered to be qualified for these positions.
• To fill engineering technology and/or computer science positions, it is recommended that the Contractor have successfully completed an undergraduate or graduate degree with a major in engineering technology or computer science from a college or university with an ABET-accredited engineering technology or computer science program.
