Job summary

The National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) in Golden, Colorado invites undergraduates and graduates to apply for a full-time post undergraduate/graduate internship in the Synthetic Biology and Bioconversion group. The role focuses on metabolic engineering to produce renewable fuels and chemicals from biomass, with collaboration across researchers.

Candidates should have a 3.0+ GPA and be enrolled full-time in a bachelor’s or master’s program (or recently graduated).

Qualifications

• Demonstrated experience in molecular biology, including DNA cloning and transformation.
• Demonstrated experience in microbiology, including sterile techniques.
• Preferred: genetic engineering of Cupriavidus necator and plasmid design.
• Experience with biological conversion of C1 substrates and data analysis with Python or R.

Responsibilities

• Engage in metabolic engineering and synthetic biology to generate and optimize engineered bacterial strains.
• Screen strains for production of renewable fuels and chemicals from biomass-derived substrates.
• Collaborate with researchers to validate physiological hypotheses and document results.
• Maintain a clean, safe lab space and communicate findings clearly.
