JOB DESCRIPTION

Class Title: Special Education Classroom Assistant

Characteristics of the Class: Under the general direction of the school principal and immediate supervision of a qualified Special Education teacher, assists in teaching students with disabilities and performs related duties as required.

Essential Functions:

  1. Assist Special Education teachers in reinforcing learning for students with various disabilities in accordance with their Individual Education Program (IEP).
  2. Help lift and position non-ambulatory students following written medical instructions.
  3. Provide one-on-one tutoring and personal hygiene services, including toileting and diaper changing.
  4. Assist students with orthopedic impairments by adjusting tools, equipment, and aids used in classrooms.
  5. Help instruct students in daily living skills for independence.
  6. Accompany students to swimming pools, medical clinics, and on field trips to assist with personal needs and safety.
  7. Assist in feeding students unable to feed themselves.
  8. Take notes and correct homework for students with special needs.
  9. Maintain records of student behavior and progress.
  10. Participate in workshops and training to update skills.

Marginal Functions: May include physical restraint of violent students, CPR administration, operating audiovisual and photocopying equipment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid paraprofessional license from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), obtained after completing 60 semester hours of college credit or passing a paraprofessional exam.
  • Knowledge of characteristics of students with disabilities, English grammar, spelling, and basic mathematics.
  • Ability to work with students aged birth to 21 with various disabilities, follow instructions, and maintain reports.
  • Physical ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force and perform related physical tasks.
  • Good communication skills; CPR training is highly desirable and required if not already completed.
