JOB DESCRIPTION
Class Title: Special Education Classroom Assistant
Characteristics of the Class: Under the general direction of the school principal and immediate supervision of a certified Special Education teacher, assists in teaching students with disabilities and performs related duties.
Essential Functions:
- Assist in reinforcing learning efforts for students with various disabilities, including physical, sensory, learning, behavioral, emotional, and mental impairments, in accordance with each student's IEP.
- Lift and position non-ambulatory students as instructed, following medical guidance.
- Provide one-on-one tutoring and personal hygiene services, including toileting and changing diapers.
- Assist students with orthopedic impairments by adjusting tools, equipment, and aids.
- Help students develop daily living skills for independence.
- Accompany students to swimming pools, clinics, and on field trips.
- Assist in feeding students unable to feed themselves and take classroom notes for students with disabilities.
- Correct homework and maintain behavioral records.
- Participate in workshops and training sessions to update skills.
Marginal Functions:
- May use physical restraint techniques, operate audio-visual and photocopying equipment, and administer CPR if trained.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Valid paraprofessional license from the Illinois State Board of Education, obtained after 60 college credits or passing a paraprofessional exam.
- Knowledge of characteristics of students with disabilities, English, and basic math.
- Ability to work with students from birth to 21 years old, follow instructions, and complete reports.
- CPR training is highly desirable; must complete training if not already certified.
Physical Requirements:
Medium work involving exerting up to 50 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds constantly, with the ability to reach, handle, and communicate effectively.
