Job summary

Avera Health is seeking a dedicated team member for our hospital switchboard and communications center in South Dakota. This evening/weekend role processes high volumes of calls, supports the public, and monitors alarms and codes to ensure patient safety and smooth operations.

You will be part of a multidisciplinary team, providing clear, calm communication and accurate information while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism at all times.

Qualifications

  • Able to work the hours specified (evenings/weekends).
  • Strong communication and listening skills to assist the public.
  • Capacity to manage high call volume with accuracy and empathy.

Responsibilities

  • Handle a high volume of inbound and outbound calls in a timely manner.
  • Identify customer needs, clarify information, research, and provide solutions or alternatives.
  • Follow scripts for call scenarios, alarms, and emergency codes.
  • Communicate clearly, calmly, and professionally using the paging system for emergencies.
  • Maintain knowledge of hospital switchboard, phone system, and related programs.
  • Assist with departmental operations during evenings, weekends, or designated times.

A Brief Overview

Responsible for processing inbound and outbound calls, directing the general public, making overhead announcements, monitoring video surveillance, monitoring critical alarms, and processing emergency medical codes.

What you will do

  • Handles large amounts of inbound and outbound calls in a timely manner.
  • Identifies customer needs, clarifies information, researches, and provides solutions and/or alternatives.
  • Follows communication scripts for various call scenarios, alarms, and emergency codes.
  • Skillfully changes from one task to another without loss of efficiency or composure.
  • Actively participates in efforts to support customer satisfaction and maintain quality.
  • Effectively communicates with patience and understanding. Remains positive and professional in all internal and external interactions.
  • Communicates clearly, calmly, and professionally utilizing overhead paging system to communicate emergencies and general information.
  • Informs appropriate resource of any trouble lines reported by personnel.
  • Must maintain a working knowledge of hospital switchboard, phone system, and associated programs.
  • Assists with departmental operations during evenings, weekends, or other designated times as needed.

Required Education, License/Certification, or Work Experience:

  • High School or GED Equivalent or 1 year related experience/training or equivalent combination of education and experience.
