Job summary

Penn Engineering, a leader in precision manufacturing, seeks a Swiss CNC Operator/Set Up/Programmer to join the Small Lot Shop. You will program, set up, and run Swiss CNC lathes, EDM, and overmold machines, ensuring tight tolerances and process efficiency.

This role requires CAM software proficiency, SPC/data collection, and familiarity with ERP systems such as JDE; performance incentives available. You will collaborate with engineering and quality teams to drive continuous improvement while

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; advanced machining certification preferred.
• 2+ years CNC programming, setup and operation with Swiss lathes preferred.
• Experience with CAM software, SPC tools, data collection, and ERP systems (e.g., JDE).

Responsibilities

• Program, set up, operate, and optimize Swiss CNC lathes, EDM and overmold machines.
• Develop and modify CNC programs using G-code/M-code for precision parts.
• Select tooling, adjust offsets, and optimize processes for quality and efficiency.
• Perform in-process inspection and maintain SPC data and documentation.
• Collaborate with engineering, sales, and logistics; support safety and maintenance.
• Train team members and support continuous improvement initiatives.

PennEngineering is seeking a motivated, excited individual to join our Small Lot Shop team as a Swiss CNC Operator/Set Up/Programmer. At Penn Engineering, you will collaborate with teams that do truly amazing things.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

As the Swiss CNC Operator/Set Up/Programmer, you will program, set up, operate, and optimize Swiss CNC lathes, EDM, and overmold machines to produce precision components and tooling from materials such as brass, aluminum, steel, carbide and stainless steel. The role demands high technical skill and attention to detail to ensure quality and efficiency in manufacturing processes while maintaining adherence to safety and quality standards.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

Programming and Setup:

• Create, optimize and modify Swiss and CNC programs using G-code and M-code to meet part specifications and tolerances.
• Program using CAM software or directly at the machine interface.
• Select, layout and install appropriate tooling and adjust tool offsets for optimal performance.
• Stay up to date with industry trends and suggest new tooling to optimize process.
• Setup Swiss, EDM and overmold machines for production runs.

Operation and Troubleshooting:

• Operate Swiss CNC lathes, EDM and overmold machines to produce precision components.
• Troubleshoot and optimize machine setups and programs to improve quality, tool life, and cycle times.
• Perform in-process inspections using micrometers, calipers, and other precision measuring instruments to ensure conformance to specifications.

Documentation and Reporting:

• Maintain accurate records of production, including data collection, SPC charts, and job-specific details in Microsoft Office, JDE, or other systems.
• Coordinate activities with internal teams such as engineering, sales, and logistics.
• Manage product flow to secondary processes such as degrease, heat treat, Quality Assurance or Shipping.

Safety and Maintenance:

• Maintain a clean and safe work environment in compliance with all safety rules and regulations.
• Conduct routine maintenance checks and identify potential issues to ensure machine reliability.
• Identify potential safety issues throughout facility.

Additional Duties:

• Assist in training team members on machine operation and safety protocols.
• Support plant with EDM and part production as schedule allows.
• Perform other tasks as assigned to support the Small Lot Shop and broader production objectives.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to stand for extended periods (8-12 hours per shift).
• Visual acuity and dexterity to interpret detailed part prints, inspect small components, and make precise adjustments.
• Capability to work in air-conditioned or non-air-conditioned environments.
• Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs. repetitively and occasionally lift up to 75 lbs. throughout a shift.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively with team members and other departments.

Education and Qualifications:

Required:

High School Diploma or GED.

Preferred:

Associate’s degree (AAS) or certification in Machining Technology or equivalent experience. Minimum of 2 years of experience in CNC programming, setup, and operation, with a focus on Swiss-style lathes preferred. Proficiency in using CAM software, SPC tools, and data collection systems. Familiarity with Microsoft Office and ERP systems (e.g., JDE).
