Job summary

Smith & Richardson in Illinois is seeking an experienced machinist to set up, operate, and troubleshoot CNC, VMC, and Swiss turning machines. You will perform first inspections and support in-process quality checks.

The role includes reading blueprints, preparing setup sheets, and maintaining workmanship standards while working on the 2nd shift, which carries a wage premium. Candidates should have 3–5 years of related machine tooling experience, and be able to read calipers and micrometers,

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent and basic math skills.
  • Blueprint reading is required; read and interpret engineering drawings.

Responsibilities

  • Set up machines following blueprints and work orders.
  • Load material on machines and operate as needed across various equipment.
  • Fine tune machines to pass first inspection and document results.
  • Read and interpret workmanship standards and fill out work orders.
  • Use micrometers, calipers, and gauges correctly and safely.
  • Perform and document S&R inspection procedures as required.
  • Identify nonconforming product or material and communicate with supervision.
  • Maintain cleanliness and oiling of tools and machines; assist with minor repairs.
  • Move parts to next operation and remove scrap as needed.
  • Operate pallet trucks and assist with safety procedures.

Job description

General Description:

Set-up, operate, and trouble shoot a variety of machines including CNC, VMC, and SWISS machines. Responsible for first inspection and inspection during production, and responsible for updating and maintaining set-up sheet and program.

Responsibilities:
  • Set-up machines following blue prints and according to work order
  • Load material on machines as needed: band and wire on slide form, radiator, multiplex, large and small dial; coil on punch press, cut off machine; strips on automatics, punch press; sheets on slitters, shears, perforators; bars on automatic feed saw; bath in plating; parts on groovers
  • Fine tune machine until product passes first inspection
  • Operate machine if required: feed band on automatics, assemble two plates and a stem on the hand weld machine
  • Read, understand information in workmanship standards
  • Fill out appropriate sections of work order
  • Handle, store, use micrometers, calipers, gages appropriately
  • Perform and document S&R inspection procedures when appropriate (SPC charts, work orders, move tickets)
  • Identify nonconforming product or material
  • Wash tools and return to storage area
  • Oil, lube, clean and perform minor repairs as needed
  • Communicate with tool room or maintenance as required by supervisor
  • Assist with training of Operator persons as needed
  • Know and follow safety standards
  • Participate in corrective actions as required
  • Move parts to next operation
  • Remove scrap
  • Operate pallet trucks

Physical Demands:
  • Lift up to 75 pounds
Environmental/Atmospheric Conditions:
  • Indoor conditions, noise, hazards, odors, toxic conditions, dust, and periods of travel to support company's international facilities may be required
Job Qualification Requirements:
  • Knowledge/Experience
    • High school graduate or equivalent; reading, basic math, blueprint reading
    • Three to five years' experience with metal stamping, wire forming machinery
    • 1-2 years operating CNC machines
    • 1-5 years setup experience, Swiss Lathe experience preferred
    • Tool design, machine repair helpful
    • Ability to lead/train
  • Training Period: 3 months to a year
  • Machines, Tools, Equipment
    • CNC, hand tools, measuring instruments, surface and bench grinders. Lathe, mill, and drill press experience helpful

  • Written and verbal work instructions, workmanship standards book (engineer drawings), quality control documentation (work orders, move tickets)
