Position Summary

The Swim instructor plans and delivers effective swim instruction, using the Y of the USA swim curriculum, in a designated program area for YMCA members, program participants, and non-members. Instructors must be knowledgeable, punctual, professional, and show concern for class participants.

Essential Functions
  1. Demonstrate skills and explain them clearly to class members. Instructs at the appropriate skill and age level for the class.
  2. Plan each teaching class in advance, prepare to start on time with proper materials, equipment, and attire.
  3. Observe all YMCA attendance and safety rules when teaching classes.
  4. Start and end class on time.
  5. Maintain positive rapport with participants and parents.
  6. Conduct all classes according to YMCA of Cleveland standards and guidelines.
  7. Notify supervisor promptly of any problems relating to the class or program area.
  8. Ensure the safety of all participants, know emergency procedures, and the location of emergency equipment.
  9. Gather periodic feedback from participants through written evaluations provided by the Program Director.
  10. Leave the program area in a safe, 'closed down' manner.
  11. Inform students of cancellations and make-up classes promptly; obtain qualified substitutes as needed.
  12. Evaluate swimming skills and place participants in appropriate classes.
  13. Keep the pool area neat and clean.
  14. Be actively involved with members, volunteers, and staff in a positive, friendly manner reflecting YMCA's core values.
  15. Follow all policies and procedures, including safety and personnel policies.
  16. Participate in and support association events and fundraising activities.
  17. Secure required training and certifications, providing current copies to supervisor.
  18. Conduct regular sanitation of all equipment and assigned areas.
  19. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  20. Follow child abuse and neglect reporting procedures, including completing reports, calling protective services, and notifying relevant departments. All employees are mandated reporters.
Qualifications

Experience: Demonstrated public speaking ability and customer service orientation. At least 6 months of instructor experience in aquatic areas preferred.

Certifications & Requirements
  • CPR and First Aid certifications required within 30 days of hire.
  • Current swim instructor certification (WSI or YSI) preferred prior to hire or obtained within 90 days of hire.
Technical Skills and Knowledge
  • Knowledge of pool readings and chemistry.
  • Familiarity with teaching aids like kickboards, pull buoys, diving rings, etc.
  • Understanding of anatomy and exercise physiology.
  • Commitment to YMCA’s mission and values.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse backgrounds and abilities.
  • Willingness to be a mandated reporter for child abuse and neglect.
