Job description

The Swim Instructor plans and delivers effective swim instruction, using the Y of the USA swim curriculum, in a designated program area for YMCA members, program participants, and non-members. A successful candidate must be knowledgeable, punctual, professional, and show concern for class participants.

Essential Functions

1. Demonstrate skills and explain them clearly to class members. Instruct at the appropriate skill and age level for the class.
2. Plan each teaching class in advance, prepare to start on time, with proper materials, equipment, and attire.
3. Observe all YMCA attendance and safety rules when teaching classes.
4. Maintain positive rapport with participants and parents of participants.
5. Conduct all classes in accordance with YMCA of Cleveland standards and guidelines.
6. Ensure the safety of all participants, know emergency procedures and the location of all emergency equipment.
7. Inform students of class cancellations and make-up sessions in a timely manner.
8. Evaluate swimming skills and place participants in appropriate classes.

Experience

• Demonstrated public speaking ability and customer service orientation towards individuals and groups.
• At least 6 months of instructor experience in aquatic areas preferred.

Certification(s) & Requirements

• CPR and First Aid certification and safety training required within 90 days of hire.
• Current swim instructor (WSI or YSI) certification preferred prior to hire, or must be obtained within 90 days of hire.

Physical Demands

• Ability to perform frequent sitting, standing, swimming, walking, reaching, stooping, kneeling, bending, and instructing for the duration of the shift.
• Occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities include close, distance, and adjustable vision.
