POSITION SUMMARY:

The program instructor is responsible for providing age-appropriate sports programs and branch activities. They will implement program plans and supervise activities in the gym and at program sites, incorporating YMCA Character Development values into each lesson and reinforcing the Y culture. The instructor must keep the gym and program sites clean and free from clutter, recognize potential hazards, communicate effectively, and eliminate hazards related to the program areas. Adherence to policies, including the Child Abuse Prevention Plan, is required. The instructor will plan and implement culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate activities aligned with YMCA values and model relationship-building skills in all interactions.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Plan all activities in advance, ensuring punctuality with proper materials, equipment, and attire.
  2. Incorporate YMCA Character Development values into each lesson.
  3. Maintain attendance records and track participant skill development.
  4. Keep the gym area clean, recognize and communicate potential hazards, and eliminate hazards in program areas.
  5. Design and execute activities that are culturally relevant and developmentally suitable, aligning with YMCA values.
  6. Follow safety and cleanliness standards.
  7. Attend staff meetings and training sessions.
  8. Ensure all classes adhere to YMCA of Cleveland standards and guidelines.
  9. Follow YMCA policies on medical, disciplinary, child abuse prevention, and emergency procedures.
  10. Maintain positive relations with patrons and staff, demonstrating relationship-building skills.
  11. Follow child abuse and neglect reporting procedures, including completing reports, contacting protective services, and notifying supervisors and relevant departments. All YMCA employees are mandated reporters.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: High school diploma required; Associate's Degree in a related field preferred.

Experience: Minimum of one year's experience in youth programming and sports.

Certifications: CPR and First Aid certification, along with safety training, required within 90 days of hire. Must adhere to Blood Borne Pathogen standards and attend annual training.

Technical Skills and Knowledge:

  • Ability to instruct and lead classes or teams when needed.
