Job description

  1. Thinks, communicates and behaves as a cause-driven leader and role model for other staff and members when it comes to desired staff behaviors; promotes youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility in all job-related functions.
  2. Leads energizing, fun, safe, and educational classes, as directed by the supervisor, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals. Classes are taught according to the progression detailed in the swim lesson skill level sheets.
  3. Ensures participant safety during the program by educating about, and enforcing safety rules and maintaining class control.
  4. Openly communicates with participants and their parents to support them in achieving their goals related to healthy living; appraises students and their parents of strengths, accomplishments and areas for improvement/skill progression.
  5. Builds effective, authentic relationships with members; helps members connect with each other and the YMCA; implements “3 minutes” in every class.
  6. Keeps accurate class attendance and skill evaluation records.
  7. Follows YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations and participates in drills and procedures to the highest level of training permitted.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, and depth perception.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions (exposure to outside weather is frequent if working at an outdoor pool). The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Passionate belief in the Y’s cause of nurturing the potential of all youth, supporting healthy living for all people and finding ways to help and support our neighbors.
  2. Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  3. Must be at least 16 years of age and be able to swim; high school diploma and teaching experience preferred.
  4. American Red Cross CPR, First Aid, AED, Emergency Oxygen Administration certification must be obtained within the first 60 days of employment.
  5. Must obtain YMCA Swim Lesson (YSL) instructor certification within one year of hire; all certifications must be kept current during employment.
