Thinks, communicates, and behaves as a cause-driven leader and role model for staff and members, promoting youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility in all job-related functions.
Reports in uniform (swimsuit, guard shirt, towel, whistle, rescue tube, and barrier) to station at the start of the scheduled shift.
Maintains active surveillance of the pool area, refrains from socializing while on duty, and knows all emergency procedures to respond immediately according to YMCA policies and the safe-in-six model. Completes related reports as required.
Builds effective, positive relationships with members, participants, and staff. Clearly explains and enforces safety rules courteously, professionally, and firmly.
Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and state Health Department codes.
Performs equipment checks to ensure lifeguarding, rescue, and first aid equipment are available and functional; reports concerns immediately to the aquatics experience director or manager on duty.
Checks the pool for hazards upon arrival and reports any concerns promptly. Clears the outdoor pool during electrical storms or adverse weather.
Secures pools by locking doors and gates when not on duty. Performs chemical testing when not guarding and takes appropriate action.
Attends all staff meetings and in-service training, participates in emergency drills, and maintains inventory of supplies, recommending purchases as needed.
Ensures staff take adequate breaks and follow station rotation schedules. Monitors concession and gate cash systems if applicable.
