Position Summary
The Swim instructor plans and delivers effective swim instruction, using the Y of the USA swim curriculum, in a designated program area for YMCA members, program participants, and non-members. Instructors must be knowledgeable, punctual, professional, and show concern for class participants.
Essential Functions
- Demonstrate skills and explain them clearly to class members. Instructs at the appropriate skill and age level for the class.
- Plan each teaching class in advance, prepare to start on time with proper materials, equipment, and attire.
- Observe all YMCA attendance and safety rules when teaching classes.
- Start and end class on time.
- Maintain positive rapport with participants and parents.
- Conduct all classes according to YMCA of Cleveland standards and guidelines.
- Notify supervisor promptly of any issues related to the class or program area.
- Ensure the safety of all participants, know emergency procedures, and the location of emergency equipment.
- Gather periodic feedback from participants via written evaluations provided by the Program Director.
- Leave the program area in a safe, 'closed down' manner.
- Inform students of class cancellations and make-up sessions timely; arrange for qualified substitutes as needed.
- Evaluate swimming skills and appropriately place participants in classes.
- Keep the pool area neat and clean.
- Engage positively with members, volunteers, and staff, demonstrating the YMCA's core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
- Follow all policies, including safety and personnel procedures.
- Participate in and support YMCA events and fundraising activities.
- Obtain and maintain required trainings and certifications, providing current copies to supervisor.
- Sanitize all equipment regularly and as outlined by employer and supervisor.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Follow child abuse and neglect reporting procedures, including documentation, calling protective services, and notifying supervisors and relevant departments. All employees are mandated reporters.
Qualifications
Experience
- Demonstrated public speaking ability and customer service skills.
- At least 6 months of instructor experience in aquatic settings preferred.
Certification(s) & Requirements
- CPR and First Aid certifications required within 30 days of hire.
- Current swim instructor (WSI or YSI) certification preferred before hire or within 90 days of employment.
Technical Skills and Knowledge
- Knowledge of pool readings and chemistry.
- Familiarity with teaching aids like kickboards, pull buoys, diving rings, etc.
- Understanding of anatomy and exercise physiology.
- Commitment to YMCA’s mission and values.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse backgrounds and abilities.
- Willingness to act as a mandated reporter for child abuse and neglect.
