Swim Instructor-In Training (Security)

The Burnsville YMCA is seeking Swim Instructors - In Training; flexible schedule, free Y membership, and more with this fun role at the Y!

Must be age 16 and be able to pass a swim skills assessment.

The In Training wage for this position is $13.00 per hour. The full-time benefits package includes medical, dental, life, disability, and more, along with generous paid time off and free membership. Part-time benefits will vary.

1. Job Summary:

This Swim Instructor (In Training) will shadow certified swim instructors while working to obtain the required YMCA Swim Instructor Skills Verification within up to 90 days of hire. The incumbent will provide excellent customer service in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that promotes member safety and satisfaction, following YMCA policies and procedures.

2. Essential Functions:

• Shadow and assist certified swim instructors and learn programming and emergency procedures.
• Understand and communicate policies and procedures for the pool, body of water, and whirlpool.

3. Relationships:

This position reports to the Aquatics Supervisor/Aquatics Director, who reports to the Senior Director of Aquatics/Senior Aquatics Manager. The incumbent interacts regularly with their supervisor, staff, volunteers, and participants.

4. Qualifications:

• Minimum age of 16.
• Complete YMCA Swim Instructor Skills Verification within 90 days of hire.
• Patience and effective communication with all ages and levels of swimmers.
• Ability to swim in shallow and deep water, and tread water (Stage 4 level swimming skill).
• Dedicated to member safety and the YMCA's mission and philosophy.

5. Work Conditions:

• Must remain in the pool area at all times.
• Support child or adult body weight in water.
• Remain alert in a warm environment with air temperatures of 80°F or higher.
• Recognize and address hazardous situations calmly and effectively.
• Communicate verbally, projecting voice across distances and in loud situations.
• Perform physical tasks including walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
