Overview

Description: Swim Instructor I & II — Department: Aquatics, Location: Huntington YMCA, Compensation: $16.00 - $22.00 / hour. Note: Between June 15 and September 6, 2023 the YMCA of Greater Boston offers a summer incentive program for Lifeguard and Swim Instructor positions, with a pay rate of $22/hr during that period.

Position Type: Non-Exempt (Hourly)

Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Aquatics Director, this position is responsible for teaching swim lessons under the YMCA of the USA model. Instructors should have experience teaching swim lessons and enjoy working with people, especially children, as many lesson opportunities are with children. Must have active Lifeguard Certifications (e.g., YMCA, Red Cross).

Responsibilities

• Provide excellent member service by exceeding member expectations.
• Report on the deck 15 minutes before the scheduled shift dressed in a bathing suit.
• Prepare equipment before class and store it promptly after class; use available equipment, pool space, and personal resources effectively.
• Start and end classes on time.
• Agree to teach for an entire session; keep absenteeism to a minimum.
• Communicate each child’s progress with parents regularly, not only with progress reports.
• Adhere to all pool rules and policies; begin the first class with a reminder of the rules, bathrooms, etc.
• Know and implement emergency procedures.
• Maintain accurate attendance and updated skill completions using required forms. Report any student missing 3 classes to the Aquatic Director.
• Take notes on strengths and weaknesses of each child.
• Maintain class control and safety; ensure children in flotation devices stay within arm’s reach and never turn your back on the class.
• Apply good judgment to meet goals and the needs of YMCA, the class, and individual students.
• Incorporate five program components into each lesson: personal safety, water orientation/stroke development, water sports and games, rescue, and personal growth.
• Maintain clear and consistent communication with supervisors.
• Participate in branch safety and quality drills; attend required monthly and yearly in-service trainings.
• Engage in active listening with members to understand goals and assist in achieving them.
• Maintain a professional image and demeanor consistent with the YMCA mission and goals.
• All other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands

• Physically and verbally able to interact with members and staff.
• Must be able to scan the pool visually.
• May sit or stand for extended periods.
• Be able to lift up to 50 lbs when required.
