Job summary

Channel Islands YMCA is seeking an enthusiastic Swim Instructor to lead youth lessons at Camarillo Family YMCA. You will follow YUSA lesson plans, monitor stroke progression, and align sessions with core values while maintaining a welcoming environment for families.

You will assess swimmers, document progress, and adapt teaching methods to each child’s needs. A positive, safety-focused ethos and teamwork are essential in this role.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 16 years old.
• Ability to obtain a criminal record clearance, if over 18 years old.
• High School Diploma or equivalent; valid work permit required if a minor.
• Previous work experience with children or in related field preferred.
• If applicable, complete YUSA swim instructor certification within 90 days of hire.
• Complete required certification within 60 days of hire.
• Complete all required Branch and Position specific trainings as required within two weeks of hire.

Responsibilities

• Follow YUSA established lesson plans, understand stroke progression & implement the Core Values into lesson plans.
• Communicate with families on a regular basis about program information and child’s progression in swimming.
• Complete swim assessments, evaluations, and certificates of completion.
• Identify incorrect swimming techniques and provide correction.
• Adjust teaching techniques according to swimmer’s needs.
• Maintain tracking of class attendance. Ensure participants are released to caretakers.
• Provides exceptional customer service and fosters connections with members.
• Participating and satisfactory completion of in-service trainings.
• Create an environment that is welcoming, nurturing, and inclusive for all members and guests.
• Able to work collaboratively and respectfully as part of a staff team.
