Job Summary

  • This is an on-site position

Our Y is looking for outgoing Swim Instructors who enjoy teaching children and adults new skills, helping them achieve goals and preparing them for future success. In this role, you will teach water acclimation, safety, water movement, stamina, and stroke development for children and adults. Each year, our Y’s teach thousands of people to swim and enjoy water as a lifelong activity.

Hiring Range: $20.76 - $22/hour DOE

Responsibilities

  • Instruct swimming lessons as assigned following YMCA guidelines.
  • Maintain safe swimming conditions in the pool, on deck, and surrounding areas.
  • Develop positive relationships with participants and parents, encouraging involvement and identifying potential volunteers.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
  • Follow all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency and safety protocols. Respond to emergency situations as needed. Complete incident and accident reports as necessary.
  • Organize and put away class equipment. Report damaged equipment.
  • Convey basic information on YMCA programs and schedules to members and refer them to other YMCA programs as appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Who are you?

If you're the right candidate, you love teaching swimming to children and adults; find satisfaction in helping others learn and succeed; can command a class of 1-3 participants aged 3 and up; enjoy a fast-paced environment, and are flexible to teach multiple levels. You prioritize safety while teaching participants to thrive in water. You will also teach parent/child classes with up to 10 parent/child pairs.

Qualifications

  • We can facilitate certification if you don’t have it yet. Please still apply!
  • 16+ years old
  • Current swim instructor certification from a recognized organization (e.g., Y-USA) *
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certifications *
  • Current Administering Emergency Oxygen Certification *
  • Ability to assist children and others in developing swimming skills
  • Ability to lift equipment and small to average-sized children
  • Ability to teach skills effectively
  • Pass a swim competency test
  • Obtain certification within 30 days of hire

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with diverse populations (language, culture, race, ability, etc.)
  • Additional language skills are helpful
