POSITION SUMMARY

The Swim Instructor is responsible for teaching swim lessons to children at least 6 months old and adults according to Kroc Center Hawaii guidelines, enforcing pool and safety rules and Kroc Center Hawaii policies to maintain a safe environment and member and guest satisfaction.

The Swim Instructor will have a deep commitment to the mission of The Salvation Army, which will be evident in his or her professional life and the manner in which he or she represents The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in the community.

REQUIREMENTS

• Received formal swim instruction through an accredited curriculum provider or as a member of a swim club or varsity team.

PREFERENCES

• Experience teaching swim lessons and water exercise instruction.
• Familiarity with American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim levels and other Red Cross water safety courses and ability to use course materials effectively.
• Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be accepted.
• American Red Cross or Ellis & Associates Lifeguard Training Certification, American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification or equivalent, First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Teach and assist swim lessons to preschool, school-age children and adults, levels 1-6.
• Understand the Kroc Center Hawaii Aquatics program, including classes, swimming levels, skills taught in each level, and the requirements for passing each level.
• Evaluate students and recommend appropriate classes for their skill levels.
• Provide corrective and positive feedback to students to ensure learning and a positive atmosphere.
• Cover all materials required in a class. Complete student evaluations, reports and records. Maintain confidentiality of all information and documents received.
• Have all instructional equipment ready before lessons begin and put all equipment away at the end of lessons.
• Communicate regularly with participants and parents.
• Recognize distressed swimmers and provide the necessary assistance.
• Know, understand and enforce all aquatic facility policies, rules and regulations.
• Never leave students unattended.
• Maintain a positive rapport and image with students, members and guests.
• Keep the facilities clean, including pool, pool area and locker rooms.
• Follow and ensure adherence to The Salvation Army Policies and Procedures.
• Maintain the Code of Ethics policy, which has been established for the Kroc Center Hawaii.
• Attend staff meetings and other administrative meetings.
• Maintain regular and punctual work attendance. Be available to work a flexible schedule that includes weekends, holidays and evenings.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

MENTAL DEMANDS

This position requires strong organizational skills and ability to multitask. The work will be in a fast‑paced environment and must maintain poise under pressure. The candidate must be self‑motivated and self‑directed, able to take projects from beginning through completion and respond to crisis situations calmly and effectively. The role requires initiative, judgment, and ability to work independently and as part of a team.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The candidate must be able to remain in the water for the duration of swim lessons (1‑4 hours), support child weight in the water, recognize distressed swimmers, and provide necessary aid while communicating verbally and loudly across distances. They may also be required to run, swim, paddle and walk long distances; stand and sit for extended periods; use hands to operate lifesaving equipment; climb, balance, stoop, kneel, bend, stretch, crouch, crawl; handle 50‑75 pounds and occasionally more with assistance. Experience with driving a vehicle is also required.

COMMUNICATION DEMANDS

The position requires speaking to co‑workers, clients and vendors; written communication with co‑workers, clients and vendors; telephone communication; responding to written or verbal requests; training and giving verbal and written instructions; receiving instructions; writing and composing written language; reading; visiting or working at other sites; and communicating via modern technologies. The person must interact positively and professionally with diverse individuals.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK ENVIRONMENT

The employee regularly works outdoors, is routinely exposed to sun and extreme heat, works on uneven or slippery surfaces, and may be exposed to hazardous conditions or situations. Attendance at trainings and conferences, both in Hawaii and on the mainland, may be required. Extensive travel, including air, long‑distance driving, night driving and overnight travel up to three days or more, is possible.

EQUIPMENT NEEDS

Kick boards, swim buoys, hand paddles, swim noodles, associated swimming toys, and a portable swimming teaching platform.
