Description

Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Aquatics Director, the Swim Instructor (SI) provides leadership, instruction, and motivation for students in swimming classes. This role supports the YMCA's mission to strengthen community and is a part of its efforts as the nation’s largest provider of swim lessons, aiming to increase water safety skills.

The SI also builds strong relationships with members, employees, and volunteers to promote healthy lifestyles. The candidate must have good organizational, communication, and team-building skills.

Areas of Responsibility:

1. Ensure the safety of all individuals in and around the pool and across the facility.
2. Review emergency procedures and respond promptly to emergencies, completing incident reports as needed.
3. Supervise children and adults entrusted to the instructor's care.
4. Instruct swimming lessons following YMCA guidelines, with prepared lesson plans.
5. Maintain records such as attendance and progress reports.
6. Build effective relationships with students and parents; foster parent involvement and volunteer opportunities.
7. Understand and enforce safety rules and policies for the aquatic area.
8. Communicate program schedules and refer students and parents to other YMCA programs when appropriate.
9. Organize and maintain class equipment; report damaged items.
10. Attend staff meetings and training sessions.
11. Report 15 minutes before the shift in proper uniform and notify supervisors if unable to fulfill scheduled shifts, providing lesson plans for substitutes.

Qualifications

• Minimum age of 16.
• Certifications: CPR/AED, First Aid; YMCA or Red Cross Swim Instructor or Lifeguard certification preferred.
• Demonstrate swim instructor skills per YMCA standards.
• Align with YMCA values and mission.
• Complete Child Abuse Prevention training annually and report any suspected abuse immediately.
