The Astoria Aquatic Center is currently accepting applications for Swim Instructors for the upcoming summer season and beyond! We're looking for reliable individuals who can commit to a regular schedule, with availability to work a minimum of two days per week.
Swim Instructors teach children of various ages and skill levels, helping them build confidence, improve technique, and enjoy the water in a safe and supportive environment. In addition, Swim Instructors support facility operations by promoting water safety, monitoring patrons, enforcing safety rules, preventing and responding to emergencies, providing first aid and maintaining the cleanliness of the facility.
Individuals without prior experience will begin as a Swim Instructor 1 and will receive hands-on training alongside experienced Swim Instructors to learn how to effectively lead classes, develop and follow lesson plans, engage with participants and communicate progress with parents or guardians. In this role, individuals are expected to gain the skills needed to independently manage classes, understand the criteria for each swim level and successfully complete all required training before advancing to Level 2 Swim Instructor position.
Swim Instructors work part-time and are scheduled based on their availability and the staffing needs of the facility. We are looking for Swim Instructors available to work at least two days per week. Part-time positions with the City are limited to working no more than 129 hours per month.

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Employees must be able to physically perform all duties of the Swim Instructor role which includes standing, sitting, walking, lifting, reaching, bending, climbing, balancing, kneeling and crouching. Occasionally lifting and moving up to 50 pounds is required and includes the ability to assist conscious and unconscious patrons in distress out of the water and on the deck including use of a backboard.
Employees are required to communicate verbally, follow instructions and protocols and hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility or in the facility. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. While performing the duties of this position, employees are regularly exposed to wet or humid conditions (non-weather) and fumes or airborne particles (Chlorine).
