Job summary

The YMCA of Greater Hartford is hiring a Swim Instructor in West Hartford to provide direct leadership, instruction and motivation for swimming classes. You will greet participants by name, build relationships with families, and uphold the YMCA mission and core values during lessons.

Responsibilities include delivering structured lessons, maintaining records, coordinating with staff, and ensuring safety in all activities.

Qualifications

  • Must be 16 years of age or older.
  • Current YMCA swim instructor certificate or equivalent, CPR for the Professional Rescuer Certification (infant, child and adult), Oxygen Admin and First Aid certification optional.
  • Experience in teaching swimming and building relationships with students and parents.

Responsibilities

  • Instructs swimming lessons following guidelines and prepared lesson plans.
  • Builds authentic relationships with students and parents; encourage volunteer involvement.
  • Maintains records (attendance, progress reports) and refers to other programs when appropriate.
  • Trains and supervises class aides; provides a lesson plan for substitutes.
  • Follows safety procedures and completes incident reports as needed.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Aquatics Director, The Swim Instructor provides direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for students in swimming classes. Greets everyone by using names whenever possible; extends thanks whenever appropriate; building relationships is always a priority. The position is responsible for ensuring that the mission, purpose, image and core values of the YMCA of Greater Hartford is conveyed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with the YMCA of the USA and YMCA of Greater Hartford Swim Lessons Program Guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
  • Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
  • Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs.
  • Maintains records as required (i.e., attendance, progress reports, etc.).
  • Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
  • Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
  • Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
  • Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.
  • Provides a lesson plan for any substitute.
  • Promotes the YMCA mission and demonstrate YMCA Character Development to all members.
  • Acquainted with other available facilities and activities.
  • Enforces all pool rules.
  • All other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be 16 years of age or older.
  • Current YMCA swim instructor certificate or equivalent, CPR for the Professional Rescuer Certification (infant, child and adult), Oxygen Admin and First Aid certification optional.
  • In addition to the above requirements, it is expected that a swim instructor will bring to his/her position maturity, responsibility, positive values and sincere interest in working with people.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:

  • Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
  • Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child.
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to emergency situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency
