Job summary

YMCA of Columbia-Willamette is seeking a Swim Instructor to teach swim lessons using the YMCA curriculum and foster a safe, supportive learning environment for youth and adults alike.

You will plan sessions, assess progress, and communicate with families. This part-time role offers flexible hours, access to YMCA facilities, and opportunities to grow within the program.

Qualifications

• Be at least 16 years old.
• Commit to an entire 4-week session of swim lessons.
• Possess (or obtain within 30 days) CPR/AED & First Aid certification.
• Strong understanding of swim stroke techniques.
• Pass a written/physical assessment prior to duty.
• Visual and auditory ability to respond to emergencies.
• Observe participants, enforce safety regulations and apply policies.
• Current certification not necessary — training is available.

Responsibilities

• Plan and teach swim lessons using the YMCA Swim Lesson Curriculum.
• Recognize and correct strokes and skills using positive feedback.
• Communicate effectively with students and parents in a friendly, patient manner.
• Track and log swim lesson participant skill progression.
• Keep skills current with Inservice Training.
• Be a positive role model for youths in your community.
• Uphold the YMCA Policies and Standards.

• Planning and teaching swim lessons using the YMCA Swim Lesson Curriculum
• Recognizing and correcting strokes and skills using positive feedback

• Tracking and logging swim lesson participant skill progression
• Keeping your skills fresh with Inservice Training
• Being a positive role model for youths in your community
• Upholding the YMCA Policies and Standards

Requirements

What do you need to qualify?

• Be at least 16 years old
• Have the ability to commit to an entire session (4 weeks) of swim lessons consistently
• Possess (or obtain within 30 days) a current CPR/AED & First Aid Certification*
• Have strong understanding of swim stroke techniques
• Be able to pass a written/physical assessment prior to duty
• Have visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and physical ability to act swiftly in emergency situations
• Have ability to observe participant activities adequately, enforce safety regulations, and apply appropriate policies and procedures
• Current certification not necessary - certification/training is available!

• Butterfly (or you best attempt)
• Side Stroke
