Job summary

The Bay Club Company is seeking a Seasonal Aquatics Instructor to provide private and group swim instruction under the Aquatics Director, maintaining a safe learning environment and helping members reach their goals while delivering excellent hospitality.

Responsibilities include designing lessons, evaluating progress, enforcing pool rules, maintaining records, and assisting in events; strong communication with families and staff is essential.

Qualifications

  • Current Red Cross Lifeguard certification required.
  • WSI certification or equivalent required.
  • Experience teaching swim lessons to all ages.
  • Knowledge of water hazards, lifesaving techniques, first aid, and hazard recognition.
  • Proficient swimming ability and mastery of rescue and first‑aid techniques.

Responsibilities

Seasonal Aquatics Instructor
Job Summary

Under the direction of the Aquatics Director, the Seasonal Aquatics Instructor is responsible for providing private and group swim instruction to clients. The role requires maintaining a safe learning environment, helping clients achieve their swimming goals, meeting personal revenue targets, and delivering excellent customer service and hospitality to members and guests.

Swim Instructor Responsibilities
  • Provide instruction and give specific and corrective feedback to each client during each session.
  • Design and deliver effective and rewarding lesson plans and workouts.
  • Provide swim evaluations to help parents determine appropriate programs and support client retention.
  • Maintain accurate, current records of all clients' progress; follow progression guidelines.
  • Enforce pool rules, aquatic center and club policies.
  • Maintain a consistent work schedule; arrive punctually for sessions.
  • Communicate effectively with parents, members, and staff.
  • Track attendance of client sessions.
  • Enter and maintain timely records of hours worked and sessions in required systems.
  • Participate in events, program meetings, and training, including in‑service sessions.
  • Assist in maintaining the cleanliness of the aquatic center.
  • Represent the club professionally through appearance, communication, and prompt follow‑through.
Lifeguard Responsibilities (if applicable)
  • Supervise swimmer activities and consistently enforce rules and regulations.
  • Notify swimmers of improper activities or hazards.
  • Rescue persons in distress or at risk of drowning, provide rescue breathing, CPR, and first aid.
  • Notify the Aquatics Director of accidents, rescues, or problems.
  • Report equipment needing repair to the Aquatics Director.
  • Answer inquiries about pool use and aquatic services.
  • Direct helpful suggestions from participants to the Aquatics Director or Club Management.
  • Attend all staff meetings and trainings.
  • Be available to work weekdays, weekends, and holidays as needed; hours may vary.
  • Be punctual; wear the appropriate uniform, sunscreen, and rescue equipment.
  • Help keep the pool deck clean, safe, and organized.
  • Follow all safety procedures and precautions.
  • Deliver high‑quality customer service; give full attention to users in the guard chair.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Current Red Cross Lifeguard certification required.
  • WSI certification or equivalent required.
  • Experience teaching swim lessons to all ages.
  • Knowledge of water hazards, lifesaving techniques, first aid, and hazardous situation recognition.
  • Attentiveness to visual and audible cues for identifying swimmers in distress.
  • Proficient swimming ability and mastery of rescue and first‑aid techniques.
  • Ability to extract victims from the pool to the deck.
  • Effective communication skills and positive engagement with membership.
  • Understanding of sales and marketing principles for promoting services.
  • Problem anticipation and deductive reasoning; logical problem‑solving skills.
  • Oral comprehension and expression to convey ideas clearly.
  • Computer skills to develop and maintain records in Word, Excel, and other required software.
Swim Instructor Tiers
  • Master Swim Instructor
    • Minimum of 60 lessons per month (average of 6 months).
  • Elite Swim Instructor
    • 4+ years experience teaching preferred.
    • Minimum of 80 lessons per month (average of 6 months).
  • Ultimate Swim Instructor
    • 6+ years experience teaching preferred.
    • Minimum of 100 lessons per month (average of 6 months).
Working Conditions / Physical Requirements
  • Work typically performed outdoors in varying weather, including hot conditions.
  • Requires punctuality; weekends, evenings, and holidays are required.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing work environments.
  • Daily public contact with members and guests.
  • Ability to handle difficult or upset individuals professionally.
  • Use of hands to touch, handle, or feel items; reach with hands and arms.
  • Climb or balance; occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Sometimes sit for extended periods and walk around the facility.
  • Talk and listen continuously.
  • Move up to 10 pounds routinely and lift or move up to 50 pounds in emergencies.
  • Visual acuity requirements: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
Pay Range

$16.80 – $40.00 per hour
