General Function :

Under the supervision of the designated supervisor, and in harmony with the mission and purpose of the established policies and goals of the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas, the Swim Instructor is responsible for teaching proper stroke and swim techniques, and water safety. The instructor will work with staff to welcome, connect, support, and engage members, guests, and staff, ensuring high-quality service.

Qualifications :

• Minimum of 16 years of age.
• Red Cross Lifeguarding/YMCA Lifeguarding certification preferred; must become certified within six months of hire if not already.
• Red Cross Water Safety Instructor or YMCA Swim Lesson certification preferred; must become certified within six months of hire if not already.
• Certification in CPR/First Aid/AED/O2.
• Complete and maintain required trainings including NEO, Bloodborne Pathogens, Child Abuse Prevention, and Sexual Harassment upon hire and annually.
• Satisfactory criminal background and Child Protective Services checks.

Essential Functions :

• Support YMCA’s mission, vision, and goals.
• Promote a professional environment by modeling caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
• Lead programs that focus on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
• Teach swim lessons as scheduled, ensuring all equipment is ready.
• Maintain student progress records.
• Be familiar with swim level skills for which certified.
• Communicate with participants about their progress.
• Wear appropriate attire, such as an approved one-piece swimsuit or professional clothing.
• Follow mandated abuse reporting procedures.
• Distribute certificates at session end.
• Attend scheduled staff meetings and trainings.
• Act as a leader during emergencies and report incidents per Emergency Communication Plan.
• Ensure a safe environment following Emergency Operations Plan (EOP).
• Maintain relevant certifications.
• Follow association guidelines.
• Participate in YMCA fundraising efforts, including Annual Support and United Way Campaigns.
• Perform other duties as needed to ensure excellent member experience.

• Pass lifeguard water tests and ongoing drills.
• Remain alert and attentive.
• Stand or sit for extended periods.
• Hear noises and recognize distress signals.
• Scan the pool continuously with clear vision.
• Perform strenuous physical tasks for rescues.
• Communicate verbally, projecting voice across distances and in loud situations.
