YMCA Newark is seeking an entry-level swim instructor to teach swimming lessons in Newark, OH, following approved lesson plans and safety guidelines.

You will build positive relationships with students and parents, promote YMCA programs, and maintain records. This role requires communication skills, certifications, and lifeguard experience, with a part-time, day-shift schedule.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 16 years old.
  • CPR, First Aid and AED for the Professional Rescuer certifications are required.
  • YMCA Swim Instructor certification or equivalent.
  • 2 years of lifeguarding experience or equivalent training.
  • Ability to demonstrate swim instructor skills per YMCA standards.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal, written and interpersonal) with diverse populations.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct swimming lessons according to lesson plans and YMCA guidelines.
  • Build relationships with students and parents; encourage involvement.
  • Share information on aquatics programming and schedules.
  • Maintain accurate program records including attendance, progress and incidents.
  • Follow safety rules and report unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings.

POSITION SUMMARY

Provide direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in swimming classes. Create a positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Instruct swimming lessons in accordance with lesson plans and YMCA guidelines.
  • Build effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helping to build the connection with the YMCA. Encourage parental involvement and identify potential volunteers.
  • Share information on aquatics programming and subsequent schedules. As appropriate refer students and parents to other YMCA programs.
  • Maintain accurate, complete and timely program records including but not limited to attendance sheets, progress reports and accident/incident forms.
  • Understand, communicate and consistently apply all safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
  • Report any unsafe conditions/equipment to supervisor immediately.
  • Attend all staff meetings and in-service trainings.
Child Protection Responsibilities
  • Adheres to policies related to boundaries with youth.
  • Participates in required abuse risk management training.
  • Reports suspicious and inappropriate behaviors.
  • Follows mandated abuse reporting requirements.
  • Adheres to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be at least16 years of age.
  • CPR, First Aid and AED for the Professional Rescuer Certifications as well as Emergency Oxygen.
  • YMCA Swim Instructor certification or equivalent.
  • 2 years of previous lifeguarding experience; or equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
  • Ability to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal, written and interpersonal)
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations.

The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions (exposure to outside weather is frequent if working at an outdoor pool). The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
