Description

This position supports the mission and work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization. The Swim Instructor maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while providing direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for swim lesson participants. The Swim Instructor ensures the well-being of each participant in line with YMCA of the USA guidelines and association policies, in accordance with their training. This results in a cause-centered culture that is welcoming, genuine, hopeful, nurturing, and determined, while also managing high-quality, member-focused aquatics programs.

Essential Functions
  1. Models the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility with members, colleagues, guests, volunteers, and vendors.
  2. Develops and maintains positive relationships with volunteers, members, program participants, and colleagues at all levels of the organization; helps members connect with each other and the YMCA.
  3. Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly, and supports members and program participants in achieving their goals.
  4. Maintains proper attendance and skill records; prepares required progress reports as directed, as well as provides participants and their families with recommendations for follow-up lesson placement.
  5. Follows all aquatic procedures and guidelines including those pertaining to health and safety, sessions, forms, reports, and staff expectations.
  6. Develops positive relationships with participants and provides motivational support and guidance.
  7. Acts as an ambassador of all YMCA programs, with a focus on Aquatics programs, schedules, and member engagement.
  8. Maintains physical presence at all times during classes and remains aware of pool surroundings and participants in the pool.
  9. Knows, follows, and enforces all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures, and those for the prevention of child abuse.
  10. Attends all mandatory meetings and trainings.
Requirements
  1. Availability for morning programs on Tues, Wed, Thurs, & Fri 9am-12pm.
  2. 18+ years of age.
  3. Must obtain and maintain CPR, AED, First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certifications within 60 days of employment.
  4. Must obtain and maintain YMCA Swim Lessons Instructor certification within 6 months of employment.
  5. Ability to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  6. Ability to observe and instruct participants in proper stroke technique.
  7. People-oriented with professional communication and organizational skills.
  8. Passion for helping others, patience, and adaptability to evolving situations.
  9. Experience teaching and assisting in swim activities within a busy pool environment.
  10. Ability to work well with youth and adults from diverse backgrounds.
  11. Willingness to work flexible hours, including some weekends and holidays.
  12. Successful completion of a swimming and physical skills test upon hire, and annually per CCC YMCA guidelines.
