Job summary

Olympic Peninsula YMCA in Port Townsend, WA is seeking an energetic swim league coach to lead youth programs and promote safety and enjoyment in the water. This role provides direct leadership, instruction, and development for youth swimmers within YMCA guidelines, fostering a positive, safe atmosphere.

The position requires coaching experience with youth programs, strong organizational and communication skills, and a commitment to safety.

Qualifications

  • 17 years of age or older.
  • One or more years’ experience coaching or assisting coaching a youth swim league.
  • Must possess strong organization and management skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Google suites, etc.
  • Pass a Washington State Background check.
  • Ability to relate well and communicate effectively with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as required, including child abuse prevention training within 7 days of hire.
  • Uphold YMCA policies for safety, supervision, mandated reporting, and risk management.

Responsibilities

  • Passion for high standards and belief in the YMCA mission for youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
  • Establish new program activities and expand program(s) within the community in accordance with the Association and branch strategic plans.
  • Comply with program statistics and provide data and reports as required for assigned program(s). Monitor and evaluate participation in the program(s).
  • Ensure safety procedures are followed and that all programs are in compliance with YMCA standards, all relevant regulations, and applicable standards.
  • Ensure high-quality programs through innovative program development evaluations and ongoing training of staff.
  • Work with Communication and Marketing Specialists to develop, produce, and distribute swim league information to promote participation.
  • Ensure upkeep of related facilities and equipment.
  • Direct on-site supervision of swim league participants and staff during swim league practices/meets.
  • Submit hours worked accurately on the electronic timecard, within timelines for supervisor approval.

General Function

Develops, organizes, and implements a high‑quality, member‑focused YMCA swim league program.   • Must possess strong organization and management skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Google suites, etc.
  • Pass a Washington State Background check
  • Ability to relate well and communicate effectively and relate to a diverse group of individuals, in all circumstances
  • Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as required and complete all online trainings which includes child abuse prevention training within 7 days of hire
  • Uphold YMCA policies for safety, supervision, mandated reporting, and risk management. Adheres to policies related to boundaries with youths

Preferred (can be acquired after hiring)

  • YMCA Lifeguard certification or equivalent
  • Basic Life Support Certification
  • Current state‑approved CPR and First Aid certification
  • Emergency Oxygen administration certification
  • Recognized coach/Member certification with USA Swimming
