Qualifications

  • Experience managing environmental performance data and utility metrics.
  • Advanced Excel and Power BI skills.

Job description

A leading real estate investment organization is seeking a Sustainability & ESG Associate to help advance environmental performance initiatives across a diverse property portfolio. This individual will play a central role in collecting, analyzing, and reporting sustainability-related data while supporting the firm's broader environmental, social, and governance (ESG) priorities.

The position will partner with investment, portfolio management, and operations teams to incorporate sustainability considerations into day-to-day decision-making and long-term business strategy. Responsibilities include managing industry benchmarking submissions, coordinating investor-related ESG requests, monitoring resource consumption data, and assisting with compliance related to evolving environmental regulations.

The ideal candidate combines strong analytical capabilities with an understanding of real estate operations, investment management, and sustainability reporting practices. This role reports directly to the firm's senior sustainability leader.

Key Responsibilities
ESG Program Execution
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to support the implementation of sustainability initiatives throughout the investment portfolio.
  • Evaluate environmental risks, opportunities, and performance metrics associated with existing and prospective investments.
  • Assist in developing practical action plans that align portfolio-level activities with broader ESG objectives.
  • Support the integration of sustainability considerations into acquisition, asset management, and portfolio management processes.
Reporting & Investor Support
  • Coordinate annual sustainability benchmark and assessment submissions, ensuring data accuracy, consistency, and adherence to deadlines.
  • Work alongside external advisors and consultants to compile and validate required reporting information.
  • Assist with investor communications related to sustainability performance, including due diligence requests, questionnaires, and periodic reporting materials.
  • Contribute to the preparation of presentations, reports, and analyses highlighting environmental initiatives and portfolio results.
  • Participate in industry organizations and professional forums to maintain awareness of emerging trends and market practices.
Data Management & Analytics
  • Oversee the collection, validation, and maintenance of utility, energy, emissions, and water consumption data across the portfolio.
  • Produce recurring performance analyses and identify operational improvement opportunities through benchmarking and trend evaluation.
  • Develop and enhance reporting tools, dashboards, and automated workflows to improve data visibility and efficiency.
  • Support the maintenance and optimization of sustainability data management systems.
Regulatory Compliance
  • Monitor changes to environmental regulations, disclosure requirements, and building performance standards impacting real estate assets.
  • Assist with portfolio-wide compliance efforts and required reporting obligations.
  • Work with internal and external stakeholders to ensure timely responses to regulatory developments and sustainability-related mandates.
Desired Qualifications
  • 3 to 7 years of experience within sustainability, ESG, real estate operations, energy management, or a related field.
  • Bachelor's degree in Sustainability, Environmental Studies, Business, Data Analytics, Real Estate, or another relevant discipline preferred.
  • Familiarity with industry sustainability frameworks, reporting standards, and benchmarking platforms.
  • Experience managing environmental performance data and utility consumption metrics.
  • Strong analytical mindset with the ability to interpret complex datasets and communicate findings effectively.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with experience working across functional teams.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Power BI, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Knowledge of emerging climate regulations, building performance requirements, and ESG disclosure expectations.
  • Professional sustainability credentials or certifications are advantageous.
