Role Overview:
The surveyor position provides expert advice and technical assistance to state forest staff who manage 13 state forests with over 1,200 miles of boundary line. The surveyor position for the Division of Forestry serves as a lead surveyor, someone who has already obtained their license following apprenticeship and on the job training which has provided them with several years of experience. The position is to have considerable knowledge of laws, policy and procedure pertaining to surveying and real estate. The position must prepare well-written reports, letters, and memos on findings to be recorded or used in court cases. The position must have a working knowledge of survey equipment and software to perform field and office work.
The position requires a license since there are no other licensed surveyors with the division to work under. Standard duties include but are not limited to the ability to perform in-depth courthouse research; retracement surveys to establish boundaries, understand and interpret deeds; establish state forest corners and boundaries; review easement requests the division receives to protect the state if approved by leadership; write descriptions and complete surveys for any easement the division pursues; serve as an expert on boundary line disputes (e.g., trespasses, timber theft, etc.) between the state forest and adjacent landowners; and perform elevation surveys for various division construction projects; and assist engineering with other survey related needs. In the past this position has assisted engineering by performing survey work, deed and description reviews, or providing free technical assistance for other divisions (e.g., Parks, F&W, Water, etc.) projects.

This position is exempt from overtime compensation for additional work hours which may be required to complete essential functions or other assigned work. Exempt employees may work more than 75 hours in a pay period without additional compensation and must report a minimum of 75 hours per pay period of work hours and/or paid leave taken to receive their base biweekly salary.
Individuals in this role should minimally be able to articulate or demonstrate the following:
Work experience must include all aspects of field survey data collection, office analysis and computations based on the field data, and final presentation of the finished product in a format usable to the customer. Experience with both total stations, GPS and differential leveling, and both 2nd and 3rd order levels, is required.
Individuals should have the ability to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
