Job summary

KLJ is seeking a field-oriented survey technician to support boundary, topographic, and construction surveys. You will collect data from deeds and plans, operate survey instruments, and assist with staking and documentation in real-world field conditions.

The role emphasizes safety, accuracy, and collaboration with engineers and technicians. Training and growth opportunities are available on-site in North Dakota.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma required.
• Technical surveying coursework preferred.
• Basic understanding of land survey principles.
• Familiarity with survey equipment and field procedures.
• Exposure to AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation, GeoPak, or similar platforms.

Responsibilities

• Assist with collecting and analyzing data from deeds, titles, utility records, structural plans, and related documents.
• Operate survey instruments (Leica Robotic Total Stations and GPS) to support boundary, topographic, as-built, subdivision, profile, and existing condition surveys.
• Support construction compliance verification and field staking activities.
• Assist with mapping, drafting, and preparation of survey documentation.
• Generate field notes, photographs, sketches, calculations, and digital files using AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation, GeoPak, or similar software.
• Help verify conformance with regulations, boundaries, and construction specifications.
• Maintain strong safety practices in all field operations.
• Participate in ongoing training and skill development.
• Uphold KLJ’s standards of quality and ethics.

What You Bring

Education

• High School Diploma required.


• Technical coursework in surveying, geomatics, or civil technology preferred.

Technical Awareness

• Basic understanding of land survey principles and practices.


• Familiarity with survey equipment and field procedures.


• Exposure to AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation, GeoPak, or similar platforms preferred.

Work Environment

This Is Primarily a Field-based Position

• 40+ hours per week


• Approximately 80% field / 20% office


• Occasional travel depending on project needs

Field work includes working outdoors in varying weather conditions and terrain.

Employees Must Be Able To

• Walk on uneven terrain up to ten miles per day


• Frequently lift up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 75 pounds


• Stand, kneel, crouch, and perform physical tasks required for field surveying
