Job summary

United Utility Services is seeking a Ground Survey Technician / UAS Ground Support Technician to gather field data from distribution and transmission lines, poles, conductors, and related equipment. You will collect essential photos, document pole framing, perform hammer sounding, and operate LiDAR and other field tools for project designers and asset managers.

Under supervision, you will travel to client sites, support field logistics, and ensure data is accurate and fully uploaded.

About the Role

Provides field support to UAS operations, Design, Permitting, Construction, and any other departments as needed to support the client. Under the direct supervision of the Survey Supervisor or Superintendent, the Ground Survey Technician / UAS Ground Support Technician will collect field data from distribution and transmission power lines, poles, conductors, and related equipment. The incumbent captures essential photos, documents pole framing and attachments, performs conductor observations, conducts hammer sounding on wood poles, and performs ground-based utility inspections in accordance with company and client standards. This position may also operate handheld or ground-based LiDAR equipment and other field tools used for utility data collection. The data collected is processed and stored for use by project designers, engineers, asset managers, and other internal stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
  • Travel to all areas under client ownership or assigned work scope
  • Utilize computer tablets and related applications to capture pole data, framing, conductor observations, and related field information
  • Take site pictures based on company and client standards and procedures
  • Perform ground-based utility pole inspections on distribution and transmission systems
  • Conduct hammer sounding / sound testing of wood poles and accurately document findings
  • Capture field data related to pole framing, attachments, hardware, equipment, and visible condition issues
  • Perform wire / conductor inspections from the ground, including documenting visible damage, attachment conditions, and other line-related observations as required by the project
  • Operate handheld or ground-based LiDAR systems and other field equipment used in utility data capture
  • Collect data using tablets, cameras, GPS-enabled devices, range finders, measuring wheels, communication sticks, multimeters, hammers, LiDAR units, and other field equipment
  • Review field data for completeness, photo clarity, and accuracy before leaving assigned work areas
  • Organize, label, transfer, and upload field data in accordance with company and client workflows
  • Maintain field productivity while following all safety, quality, and client requirements
  • Support UAS crews with field logistics, equipment handling, battery management, and visual support tasks when assigned
  • Responsible for quality control / quality assurance on project deliverables
Key Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Ability to work long hours in all weather conditions
  • Proficiency with tablets, laptops, and various field data collection programs
  • Proficiency in camera use and digital photo capture
  • Ability to identify and document pole components, framing, and visible utility equipment conditions
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work as a team and independently
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and maintain effective working relationships with the project team
  • Valid driver's license required and must be maintained throughout employment
  • Ability to travel frequently and stay overnight as required by project assignments
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate field documentation
  • Experience in utility inspection, field data collection, surveying, construction, vegetation management, UAS support, or related outdoor technical work is preferred.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft programs, including Excel and Word, and capable of using tablets, mobile applications, and digital field tools.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain it throughout the duration of employment.
  • Ability to work in the field for several hours at a time is required.
  • Proven ability to demonstrate a high level of ethical behavior, integrity, and trust is required.
  • Must actively learn and demonstrate company values and support company ethics and standards.
  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a working knowledge of company and client technical manuals, policies, procedures, and field standards, and be able to pass any company- and client-specific training and qualifications as required.
  • This position may be subject to personnel callout in support of storm damage assessment or emergency response work and may include working overtime as needed
