The salary for this position is $20-$31 per hour. Final compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and overall fit for the role.

About the Role

The Survey Technician I is an entry-level field position supporting ground-based utility inspection and data capture operations. Working under direct supervision, the Survey Technician I assists in performing pole inspections, capturing field photography, collecting asset data, and supporting overall field crew productivity. This role is focused on learning company and client standards, developing foundational field skills, and building a working knowledge of transmission and distribution (T&D) infrastructure and field data collection practices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Field Inspections and Data Collection:
  • Assist in performing ground-based pole inspections under the direct supervision of senior technicians or the Field Survey Supervisor.
  • Learn and apply company and client standards for capturing pole data, including framing, attachments, hardware, and related utility asset information.
  • Take required field photographs of poles, conductors, framing, and equipment in accordance with company and client documentation standards.
  • Assist in performing conductor and wire observations from the ground, noting conditions and relevant field details as directed.
  • Participate in hammer sounding and sound testing on wood poles, learning proper technique and documentation procedures.
  • Support the operation of handheld and ground-based LiDAR equipment under the guidance of more experienced technicians.
  • Field Data Management:
  • Organize, label, and transfer collected field data at the end of each workday in accordance with project protocols.
  • Review collected field data for obvious gaps or errors and flag issues to the supervising technician for resolution.
  • Upload field data to designated platforms as directed, following established naming conventions and file organization standards.
  • UAS and Crew Support:
  • Provide field logistics support to UAS crews when assigned, including equipment staging, battery management, and acting as a visual observer as directed.
  • Assist with general field crew setup, breakdown, and equipment handling throughout the workday.
  • Safety and Field Conduct:
  • Follow all safety protocols when working around utility infrastructure, active roadways, vehicular traffic, and the general public.
  • Adapt to changing field conditions and maintain situational awareness throughout the workday.
  • Participate in pre-job safety briefings and actively apply field safety practices at all times.
  • Maintain a clean driving record and operate company or project vehicles in accordance with company policy.
  • Travel frequently as required by project needs, including overnight stays away from home base.
  • Additional Responsibilities:
  • Perform all duties as directed by the Field Survey Supervisor in support of project and departmental goals.
Key Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • No prior field survey experience required; entry-level candidates will be considered.
  • Basic comfort with tablets, smartphones, and field data collection applications.
  • Ability to use a camera or mobile device to capture field photography to specified standards.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record required.
  • Ability to travel frequently, including extended periods away from home base with overnight stays.
  • Dependable, punctual, and willing to take direction.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to completing assigned tasks accurately.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a field crew and communicate clearly with team members.
  • Commitment to safety and a professional demeanor in the field.
Key Nice-to-Haves
  • Additional coursework or training in a related technical field.
  • Previous experience in outdoor fieldwork, construction, utilities, or a data collection environment.
  • Willingness to learn handheld and ground-based LiDAR operation, hammer sounding techniques, and conductor observation procedures.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Survey Technicians perform the majority of their work outdoors in active field environments. Employees are regularly required to walk extended distances on varied, uneven, or unstable terrain and stand for prolonged periods throughout the workday. Work is performed in all weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, wind, and direct sun exposure. Employees regularly work in proximity to utility infrastructure, active roadways, vehicular traffic, and the general public, requiring constant situational awareness and strict adherence to safety protocols at all times. Travel is frequent and typically includes extended overnight stays away from home base.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Extended walking on varied, uneven, rough, or unstable terrain throughout the workday
  • Standing for prolonged periods during field inspections
  • Carrying and transporting field equipment including cameras, tablets, handheld LiDAR devices, and related gear
  • Bending, stooping, and crouching to perform ground-level inspections and hammer sounding on utility poles
  • Visual acuity to observe and document pole hardware, conductors, framing, and field conditions at varying distances
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, and direct sunlight for extended periods
  • Capacity to maintain focus and attention to detail over long field shifts in variable and demanding conditions
  • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle for extended periods, including to and from remote field sites
