Job summary

MasTec, Inc. is seeking a Survey Tech to obtain and compute data for measuring Earth's features and to develop an understanding of construction layouts.

The role involves topographic analysis, GNSS corrections, equipment configurations, and field maintenance of surveying gear. You will collect field data, apply GPS for construction layout, and perform calculations to ensure accurate elevations and coordinates.

Qualifications

  • Education and Work Experience Requirements: Associates or Bachelor's degree in surveying, remote sensing, drafting, engineering, or related technical field preferred
  • One year of survey experience in construction or operations with exposure to engineering, civil, or renewable energy activities
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: Take reasonable care of health and safety; effective verbal and written communication; computer literacy; preferred ALTA Surveys knowledge; preferred surveying software (Trimble Business Center, MAGNET Office, Civil 3D); problem solving; ability to read and interpret documents; ability to follow procedures; valid Driver's License

Responsibilities

  • Collect field data using sophisticated measuring equipment
  • Collaborate with project team to understand construction sequence
  • Apply GPS equipment to set lath for construction, including center and offsets
  • Operate survey instruments to capture static measurements with verified residuals
  • Calculate elevations, distances, and angles for construction projects
  • Record survey measurements and descriptive data
  • Verify residuals daily using client benchmarks
  • Search for section corners, property states and survey points
  • Position and hold vertical rods/targets for sighting to measure angles
  • Maintain and troubleshoot GPS equipment as directed
  • Ensure equipment is clean, powered down, and stored properly
  • Safely operate field tools to minimize risk of injury
  • Foster communication between surveying, engineering, and project management
  • Collaborate with teams to integrate survey data into plans
  • Provide updates on surveying progress and challenges
  • Work independently and as part of the team
  • Other duties as assigned

Job description

Overview

Position Summary:

Responsible for obtaining and computing data relevant to measuring the Earth's features. This position will develop an understanding of the construction layout, conduct topographic analysis, and capture static measurements using best practices and standard operating procedures. The Survey Tech will be responsible for comprehension of various GNSS correction methods, equipment configurations, and equipment maintenance.

Responsibilities
  • Collect field data using sophisticated measuring equipment
  • Collaborate with project team to understand construction sequence
  • Apply the use of GPS equipment to set lath for construction, this included center and offsets while having the ability to field fit miscellaneous items
  • Operate survey instruments to capture static measurements for a variety of disciplines with verified horizontal and vertical residuals from client provided benchmarks
  • Perform calculations to determine accurate elevations, distances, and angles for various construction projects.
  • Record survey measurements and descriptive data using notes, drawing, sketches, etc.
  • Verify horizontal and vertical residuals daily using client provided benchmarks
  • Search for section corners, property states and survey point
  • Position and hold the vertical rods or targets used for sighting to measure angles, distances, elevations, etc.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot all GPS equipment as directed by Survey Equipment team
  • Ensure equipment and tools are clean, properly powered down, and stored at the end of the business day
  • Safely operate field tools and supplies to minimize the risk of injury and property damage
  • Foster effective communication between surveying teams, engineering teams, and project management
  • Collaborate with engineering and construction teams to integrate survey data into project plans
  • Provide regular updates on surveying progress, challenges, and solutions to site and office management
  • Work independently and as an active member of the team
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Requirements

Education and Work Experience Requirements:

  • Associates or Bachelor's degree in surveying, remote sensing, drafting, engineering, or related technical field preferred
  • One year of survey experience in construction or operations with exposure to engineering, civil, or renewable energy activities

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Take reasonable care of your own and others' health and safety and of those who may be affected by the day-to-day delivery of this role by taking personal responsibility for working toward the Company's Zero Injury principles
  • Effective verbal and written communication
  • Computer literacy and well-developed file management
  • Preferred comprehension of ALTA Surveys, and various schematics
  • Preferred understanding of surveying software e.g. Trimble Business Center, MAGNET Office, or Civil 3D
  • Ability to problem solve
  • Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form
  • Ability to work within precise standards of accuracy and follow set procedures and standards
  • Valid Drivers License Required
Working Environment
  • Regularly exposed to outside weather conditions
  • Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; and extreme heat
  • Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and vibration
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually loud
