About This Role

Cardinal is seeking a Survey Party Chief to join our dynamic and growing team. As a Party Chief, you will lead a crew of between 1–3 men. Survey Party Chief should possess high integrity and excellent attention to detail. Travel will be required from time to time at different job sites, and you must be familiar with all surveying techniques used for construction surveying.

Responsibilities
  • Monitor projects from initiation through delivery, interfacing with clients and staff on technical matters.
  • Work within defined project scopes and budgets.
  • Collaborate with project team members, including other licensed surveyors, engineers, and technical and survey staff.
  • Review the results of field surveys, including shape, contour, location, elevation, and dimensions of land features and structures.
  • Verify the accuracy of field survey data, including measurements and calculations conducted at survey sites.
  • Ensure Safety and Health are the number one priority by complying with all safe work practices, policies, and procedures. Act safely at all times.
  • Participate in or conduct and document safety meetings with the crew daily. Host or assist with morning safety meetings and remind crew of safety topics.
  • Mentor less experienced employees and train them in proper company standards; also ensure experienced employees help green workers in proper company standards.
  • Maintain digital files on assigned computer equipment to assure use of correct and current data files.
  • Provide technical direction and training for the use of hardware and equipment. Troubleshoot hardware and equipment.
  • Read and interpret engineering plans and construction documents.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Operate and adjust electronic total stations and other survey measuring instruments (level, transit, theodolite, electronic devices).
  • Take field notes of readings and observations.
  • Operate and maintain vehicle and field equipment.
  • Perform other related field and office duties as assigned.
  • Work primarily in the field on control and topographic surveys.
  • Perform some office duties, including data reduction, field note reduction, and data checks.
  • Cut and remove brush and undergrowth for line of sight.
  • Perform mathematical calculations and field checking of field data.
  • Read and understand plans and specifications.
  • Know basic sources of measurement errors.
  • Search for and locate survey monuments using pick, shovel, and other hand tools.
  • Hold and plumb rod to obtain elevations and distances.
  • Drive stakes to set grades on construction projects.
  • Provide solutions to civil site design challenges.
  • Use public records in the execution of survey fieldwork.
  • Conduct topographical surveys.
  • Conduct boundary surveys.
  • Conduct well connection pipeline surveys.
  • Conduct pipeline route staking.
  • Establish and recover survey control and monumentation; perform construction layout; obtain sewer invert and subsurface utility information; provide photo documentation of the project area.
Qualifications

Education: A high school education or equivalent is required, including a background in math, geometry, and trigonometry.

Experience: Minimum of five years of survey experience with at least three years of party chief experience.

Knowledge of
  • Controlling the function of surveying instruments and calculators.
  • Proficiency in the use of total stations, GPS receivers, and data collectors.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Analyzing site plans, project plans, blueprints, maps, and charts.
Abilities
  • Must be able and willing to travel daily.
  • Must have good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be highly motivated with the ability to work independently and with a team.
  • Must have professionalism, punctuality, and reliability.
  • Must possess strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.
  • Must be able to work in inclement weather.
  • Must be at least 21 years old or above.
  • Valid driver’s license with an insurable record.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Background check and drug testing required.
Certifications / Licenses

Valid driver’s license with insurable record.

CST or Survey Apprenticeship Preferred.

Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to lift and carry or otherwise move 25, 50, or 80 pounds regularly or occasionally.
  • Must be able to drive a vehicle safely regularly or occasionally.
  • Must be able to work in inclement weather conditions.
  • Must deal effectively and reasonably with stress in the workplace without lost time or undue strain.
  • Must be able to sit, walk, talk, and hear for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to type/key in data and answer telephones frequently as needed.
  • Must have specific vision abilities including close, distance, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus.
  • Must be able to see and respond to dangerous situations.
  • Must wear personal protective gear regularly or occasionally.
  • Physical ability to work, including bending, squatting, reaching, stretching, sitting, standing, running, and climbing stairs.
  • Must adhere to company policies, safety plan, and the project safety plan.
