Qualifications

Job Title: Survey Instrument Operator
SUMMARY

Responsible for site surveying and site layout. Provides technical information to the site superintendent/project manager to ensure compliance with all drawings and specifications. Establishes grade and working lines for PRI of East Tennessee, Inc., and its subcontractors, as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Key Duties
  • Builds Trimble and CAS models.
  • Provides horizontal and vertical control using Trimble Total Station.
  • Sets up grade control.
  • Verifies grades for drainage.
  • Establishes control lines from control points.
  • Computes surface area layout for construction activities.
  • Gathers data that will be used to compute cross-sections.
  • Assists in computation of monthly progress payment quantities.
  • Provides clear and concise output from our survey system that will be used to compute surveyed quantities.
  • Maintains surveying equipment and suggests any upgrades needed.
  • Uses Trimble GPS rover and Robotic Total Station to layout for excavation (cut/fill stakes for building pads, parking lots, and ponds), stone placement, curb and gutter placement, etc.
  • Checks materials installation versus plans/design and provides topo information to survey manager if necessary.
  • Uses laser/tape measure when necessary to achieve layout for final base prep before paving.
  • Adheres to all company, client, and project policies, procedures, standards, etc. including but not limited to the Safety Manual, the Employee Handbook, and the Fleet Safety Manual.

Other Duties May Include:

  • Measures distances from grade stakes, drives stakes, and stretches tight line.
  • Shovels aggregates, asphalt or other materials.
  • Signals operators of construction equipment to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery to conform to grade specifications.
  • Uses pick and shovel to dig.
  • Uses sledgehammer to drive pins.
  • Other duties as assigned.

This position will at times assume responsibilities of Project Manager as needed for specific projects. Project management responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Coordination and completion of projects on time, within budget and within scope.
  • Oversite on all aspects of the project.
  • Setting deadlines, assigning responsibilities and monitoring and summarizing progress of project.
  • Working directly with clients to ensure deliverables fall within the applicable scope and budget.
  • Coordinating with other departments to ensure all aspects of each project are compatible.
  • Managing project specific subordinate supervisors (foremen / crew leads) and employees (planning, assigning, and directing work).
  • Carrying out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Qualifications -
  • Minimum of one year of experience in field engineering/lay-out. Trimble preferred but not required.
  • Familiarity with machine control is a plus, but not required.
  • Good communication skills written, verbal, interpersonal.
  • It is critical that the candidate has working knowledge of plans and specifications for heavy civil work.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and multi-task in fast paced environment.
  • Working knowledge of Trimble Business Center is preferred but not required.
  • Must maintain a valid Driver's License.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
  • Must promote safety culture and awareness by practicing and enforcing safe work procedures.
  • Must be able to work under extreme weather conditions subject to extreme cold, heat, rain, snow and other inclement weather conditions.
  • Performance of required duties will require the physical ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time subject to uneven construction work site terrain.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; bend and twist at waist; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.
  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Color vision is not a specific requirement, however, for safety reasons, the employee should make management aware if the ability to distinguish color is limited.
