Job summary

Barge Design Solutions, Inc. is seeking an experienced Survey Crew Chief to lead field survey operations in the Knoxville market.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; degree preferred.
  • 3–5 years field surveying experience, 1–2 years in lead role.
  • Proficient with modern surveying equipment (GPS, robotic total stations, data collectors).
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD Civil 3D, Trimble BusinessCenter or similar software.
  • Strong understanding of surveying principles, coordinate systems, and construction layout.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and direct field survey activities per project requirements.
  • Supervise and train survey field staff in proper surveying methods and safety.
  • Perform field surveys using GPS, robotic total stations, levels, and other instruments.
  • Review field data for completeness, accuracy, and quality control.

Job description

What We're Looking For:

The Survey Crew Chief leads field survey operations supporting a variety of land development, infrastructure, and engineering projects throughout the Knoxville market. This role is responsible for planning and executing boundary, topographic, construction layout, and control surveys while ensuring accurate data collection, safe field practices, and efficient project delivery.

As the leader of the field crew, the Survey Crew Chief provides day-to-day direction to team members, operates and maintains surveying equipment, reviews field data for quality and completeness, and coordinates closely with project managers, survey professionals, engineers, and clients. The ideal candidate brings strong technical surveying experience, sound field judgment, and the ability to lead a crew while adapting to changing project and site conditions. This is an opportunity for an experienced survey professional to contribute to a growing portfolio of projects across the Huntsville market.

Responsibilities
  • Plan, organize, and direct field survey activities inaccordance with project requirements and company standards.Supervise and train survey field staff in propersurveying methods, safety procedures, and use of equipment.
  • Perform field surveys using GPS, robotic totalstations, levels, and other surveying instruments.Collect, process, and review field data forcompleteness, accuracy, and quality control.
  • Interpret and implement engineering and architecturalplans, maps, and specifications for survey projects.
  • Coordinate with project managers, engineers, andoffice staff regarding project requirements and progress.
  • Maintain field notes, sketches, and digital datarecords in an organized and accurate manner.
  • Ensure all field work adheres to applicable safety,environmental, and legal standards.
  • Troubleshoot field and equipment issues and ensureproper maintenance of all surveying instruments.
  • May perform computations and assist with preparationof survey plats, legaldescriptions, and other documentation asneeded.
Education & Experience Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associateor bachelor's degree in surveying, geomatics, civil engineering, orrelated field preferred.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of field surveying experience,with at least 1-2 years in acrewchiefor lead role.
  • Proficient with modern survey equipment (GPS, robotictotal stations, data collectors).
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD Civil 3D, Trimble BusinessCenter, or similar software preferred.
  • Strong understanding of surveying principles,coordinate systems, and construction layout techniques.
  • Valid driver's license with clean driving recordrequired.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracyand safety.
  • Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weatherconditions and terrain.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and work outdoors forextended periods.
  • Capable of lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds ofequipment.
  • Comfortable working in all weather conditions and onuneven terrain.
