Job summary

Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of experience leading a survey crew.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to follow detailed and precise instructions from plans and field notes.
  • Professional communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Ability to travel extensively to field sites.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 is helpful; CST levels preferred.

  • Resolve discrepancies and adjust methods as terrain or weather change.
  • Coordinate workflow to meet deadlines and clarify field questions.
  • Conduct field surveys safely and enforce PPE and safety rules.

Position Overview

The Crew Chief (CC) serves as the lead field surveyor, responsible for directing survey crews and executing precise fieldwork based on office‑developed plans and documentation. This role requires strong technical expertise, independent decision‑making, and the ability to adapt survey methods to varying terrain and conditions. The Crew Chief also represents the organization in the field, maintaining professional interactions with clients, landowners, and contractors while ensuring safe and efficient crew operations.

What You’ll Do
  • Translate office instructions into an accurate and efficient field survey to daily direct field activities.
  • Act as team lead to the field crew to direct, assign duties, and oversee field survey work.
  • Interpret and ensure proper field procedures and accuracy requirements established by the office are followed and met.
  • Operate equipment and ensure proper use by others on the job site while verifying accuracy of measurement, tolerances, and closures.
  • Train new instrument operators, provide ongoing coaching and feedback, demonstrate proper surveying techniques, and reinforce standards and expectations.
  • Review, maintain and organize accurate field notes, records, and electronic data while identifying errors and directing corrections.
  • Resolve discrepancies in plans or conditions and adjust methods due to terrain, access or weather, while determining when to proceed or to stop work and knowing when to elevate issues to the surveyor or project manager.
  • Coordinate workflow to meet job objectives and deadlines, clarify instructions and resolve routine field questions.
  • Always conduct field surveys in a safe manner in all climates, including enforcement of safety procedures, conducting job‑site safety briefings, monitoring traffic control and/or hazardous conditions, and ensuring personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety practices are followed by all crew members.
  • Travel extensively to field sites as needed.
  • Complete other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED and understanding of a variety of field survey equipment.
  • 3‑5 years of experience leading a survey crew.
  • Ability to follow detailed and precise instructions from plans, worksheets, field notes, etc.
  • Professional communication skills.
  • Ability to coordinate workflow daily.
  • Ability to resolve discrepancies in plans or conditions and adjust methods to accomplish and complete necessary work.
  • Valid driver’s license is required.
  • Ability to learn and operate electronic surveying instruments and train staff as needed, along with ability to use a computer and other software.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 (construction safety) is helpful, along with any survey or civil technology coursework.
  • CST (Certified Survey Technician) Level I‑III is strongly preferred.
