Job summary

Orange County Government is seeking an entry-level land surveying crew member in Orlando to assist with boundary, topographic and other public works surveys. You will set up instruments, collect elevations and coordinates, and help maintain field data and records.

You will work outdoors under supervision, follow safety procedures, and support the crew to ensure accurate survey results and timely data delivery.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Survey Party Chief with boundary, topographic, construction and other surveys.
  • Set up levels, tripods, prisms, GNSS receivers and surveying equipment as directed.

Job Description
General Functions:

Performs entry-level and progressively skilled field assignments as a member of a land surveying crew. The position assists with the collection of accurate horizontal and vertical survey data; operation, setup, care, and transport of surveying instruments and equipment; establishment and recovery of survey control and property monumentation; and completion of field records and related support activities. Work is performed outdoors under the direct supervision of a Survey Party Chief or other designated supervisor and is evaluated for safety, accuracy, reliability, initiative, and adherence to established procedures.

Representative Duties/Assignments:
  • Assists the Survey Party Chief and other crew members with boundary, topographic, construction, right-of-way, control, maintenance, drainage, hydrographic, and other public works surveys.
  • Sets up instruments, levels, and safely handles survey equipment, including tripods, prisms, targets, GNSS receivers, robotic total stations, digital or automatic levels, data collectors, and related accessories, as directed.
  • Assists with the collection of elevations, angles, coordinates, features, and other field information.
  • Assists with locating, exposing, identifying, measuring, referencing, and protecting property corners, section corners, benchmarks, control monuments, right-of-way monuments, and other survey evidence.
  • Sets stakes, hubs, nails, lath, flagging, paint, and other field marks in accordance with instructions and established survey practices.
  • Clears brush and vegetation using hand tools and performs digging or probing necessary to locate buried monumentation, or other survey features.
  • Communicates unusual conditions or discrepancies to the Party Chief.
  • Assists with transferring, organizing, and verifying electronic field data and files; follows established procedures for file naming, data security, equipment checks, and record retention.
  • Prepares and maintains survey vehicles with required equipment, tools, safety devices, batteries, supplies, and consumable materials; reports damaged, missing, or malfunctioning equipment promptly.
  • Performs routine cleaning, charging, inspection, and minor maintenance of survey instruments, vehicles, tools, and accessories in accordance with manufacturer and County procedures.
  • Sets up cones, signs, barricades, and other temporary traffic-control devices; performs flagging duties when properly trained and authorized; remains alert to traffic, construction, environmental, and site hazards.
  • Uses appropriate personal protective equipment and complies with County safety policies, maintenance-of-traffic requirements, utility-locate procedures, and applicable workplace safety standards.
  • Interacts professionally with property owners, contractors, consultants, County employees, and members of the public while working in the field.
  • Develops knowledge of survey terminology, field procedures, mathematics, mapping, plans, plats, legal descriptions, coordinate systems, datums, and applicable standards.
  • Assists during emergency-response, damage-assessment, storm-recovery, or other special assignments when directed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License.
Preferences:
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, field sketches, maps, plans, and basic survey information.
  • Ability to learn the safe and proper use of modern surveying instruments, data collectors, hand tools, and traffic-control equipment.
  • Ability to work cooperatively as part of a field crew and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the public.
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in heat, cold, rain, humidity, insects, uneven terrain, heavy vegetation, construction areas, and near vehicular traffic.
  • Ability to use sound judgment, maintain situational awareness, and follow safety procedures at all times.
  • Ability to use basic computer and mobile technology and learn electronic data-collection and file-management procedures.
  • Ability to report to work reliably, travel to job sites throughout Orange County, and work occasional early, extended, weekend, or emergency hours as operational needs require.

Pay Grade: 009 - From $17.01 to $21.56
