Job summary

Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital in Vero Beach, FL, is offering a Surgical Technology Apprenticeship that provides a pathway to becoming a Certified Surgical Technician. You will assist in OR setup, transport patients, and coordinate equipment and supplies for surgical cases, with certification exams at the end of the apprenticeship.

The program begins January 4, 2027, including orientation and foundational training, with a schedule that includes varied shifts and 24 hours per month

Responsibilities

• Maintain surgical instrument sets and equipment and ensure proper sterile conditions.
• Clean used instruments after surgery and assist with cleaning and sterilization.
• Ensure sterile conditions, order supplies, stock and maintain storage areas in the Operating Room.
• Assist in transporting patients and room turnover.
• Assist RN in maintaining a safe patient environment.
• Interface daily with physicians, staff, vendor representatives, sterile processing and storeroom as needed.
• Coordinate storage and utilization of service equipment and check expiration dates monthly.
• Coordinate and document equipment repairs and loaner returns.
• Educate staff in the proper use and functioning of equipment.

Cleveland Clinic's Surgical Technology Apprenticeship will provide you with a pathway to becoming a Certified Surgical Technician at one of the best places to receive healthcare. In this role, you will assist in transporting patients and setting up the Operating Room, maintain and operate special equipment in the Operating Room and coordinate equipment and supplies for service specific surgical cases. You will also provide limited assistance to surgeons such as holding limbs/retractors, suctioning and sponging wounds. At the end of your apprenticeship, you will take the certification exam. Upon passing, you will have the opportunity to remain in a full-time role for one year post-pipeline completion.

This position includes working a PRN schedule at Indian River Hospital while being enrolled in a Surgical Technology Program during Spring 2027. You may work any combination of 24 hours per month, which can include evenings, weekends or early mornings before clinicals.

The apprenticeship will begin on January 4, 2027 with a New Caregiver Orientation followed by Foundational Skills on January 5-6, 2027, Department Onboarding on January 7-8, 2027 and the official start of the apprenticeship to follow.

A caregiver in this position works varying shifts Monday-Friday between 4:00AM - 9:00PM and weekends between 6:00AM - 6:30PM. Working 24 hours per month will be required.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

• Maintain surgical instrument sets and equipment and ensure proper sterile conditions.
• Clean used instruments after surgery (process may require assembly and maintenance of some instruments for proper cleaning and sterilization).
• Ensure proper sterile conditions, order supplies, stock and maintain storage areas in the Operating Room for service.
• Assist in transporting patients and room turnover.
• Assist RN in maintaining a safe environment for the patient.
• Interface daily with physicians, staff, vendor sales representatives, sterile processing and storeroom as a necessary part of routine activities.
• Ensure proper storage and utilization of service equipment.
• Ensure service specific supply expiration dates are checked monthly.
• Coordinate and document equipment repairs and loaner returns.
• Work as a liaison to educate staff in the proper use and functioning of equipment.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

• High School Diploma or GED
• Enrollment in an Accredited Surgical Technology Program with maintained good standing and full completion within one year
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross

Physical Requirements

• Requires full range of body motion to include handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
• Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time.
• Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 25 pounds ad ability to push, pull, and navigate supply carts weighing up to 200 pounds.
• Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
