Job summary

Novant Health in Wilmington, NC seeks a Labor & Delivery Surgical Technologist WOW to support weekend procedures. The role requires maintaining sterile technique, preparing instruments, and assisting surgeons under supervision.

The schedule is Saturdays and Sundays, 7am–7pm, with emphasis on patient safety and teamwork. Education includes a High School diploma or GED and graduation from an accredited Surgical Technology program or equivalent military training; current certification is preferred,

  • Current Surgical Tech Certification preferred; new graduates must obtain certification within 12 months.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with patient care and maintains sterile technique during procedures.
  • Prepares sterile instruments and supplies; passes instruments to the surgeon.
  • Sets up sterile table, gowns, gloves; maintains room readiness and assists with room turnover.
  • Demonstrates effective communication and customer service skills with patients and team.

What We Offer

The Labor & Delivery Surgical Technologist WOW works Saturdays and Sundays under the supervision of a surgeon and registered nurse to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Surgical technologists possess expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

What You'll Do
Essential Functions
  • Assists with patient care while complying with Novant Health policies and procedures and regulatory standards. Maintains clinical and professional surgical services competencies. Assists in maintaining the security of medications.
  • Practices effective interpersonal communication skills.
  • Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures. Scrubs, gowns, and gloves. Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for procedures. Performs counts per Novant Health policy. Gowns and gloves surgeon and assistants. Helps in draping sterile field. Passes instruments, etc., to surgeon during procedure. Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during procedure. Prepares sterile dressings. Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization. Assists other members of the team with cleaning of the room. Assists in prepping the room for the next patient.
  • Shows courage through creating and sharing innovative ideas to improve the experience for both patients and peers. Rounds on patients to create meaningful connections and keep patients informed of visit details (delays/wait times). Models the experience principles through consistently engaging in Always Event behaviors and viewing feedback through the patient lens. Recognizes and values the unique differences and similarities in both team members and patients to create an inclusive environment where diversity is celebrated. Explains all processes to patients in plain language and utilizes teach‑back to ensure understanding. Knows and models the mission, vision, and values, and how they relate to role‑specific responsibilities. What We're Looking For

Education: High School or GED, required. Graduate of an accredited School of Surgical Technology program or Military Training Equivalent (68D – Operating Room Specialist). For incumbents who are not graduates of an accredited School of Surgical Technology or have certification, please see additional skills required. Online Surgical Tech program credits will not be accepted.

Experience: Previous Surgical Technologist experience (preferred).

Licensure/Certification: Current Surgical Tech Certification, preferred.

Additional Skills/Requirements (required): For incumbents who are not graduates of an accredited School of Surgical Technology or have certification, the following additional requirements apply: new graduates must obtain certification within 12 months of hire. Ability to successfully complete generic and department‑specific skill validation and competency testing. Demonstrate effective and appropriate customer service skills, verbal and nonverbal communication techniques, interpersonal relationship skills, and time management skills.

Work schedule: Saturday & Sunday 7am – 7pm
