Job Title: Surgical Technologist
The Surgical Technologist is responsible for planning, preparing, and maintaining surgical instrumentation and the surgical field peri-operatively. The role also includes post-operative activities such as room and instrument decontamination.
This position is part of the 1199SEIU Bargaining Unit at Cooley Dickinson Hospital and reports to the Nurse Manager, Operating Room. The role operates within established organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
Essential Functions
- Provide emotional support to patients when appropriate.
- Perform surgical skin prep using principles of aseptic technique.
- Provide appropriate barriers when draping sterile field.
- Demonstrate knowledge of surgical procedures by anticipating needs and preparing equipment in advance.
- Demonstrate knowledge of surgical instruments and update surgical trays as necessary.
- Perform ongoing assessment of operative procedures.
- Determine deviations from the norm and provide for the indicated supplies and equipment.
- Under the surgeon's direction, retract tissue, hold tissue, suction body fluids, and sponge and irrigate without harming body tissue.
- Cauterize bleeders as needed under the surgeon's direction.
- Assist in moving and positioning patients safely.
- Perform surgical counts in a safe and efficient manner.
- Ensure that appropriate instruments, supplies, and equipment are assembled for procedures.
- Ensure thorough room set-ups and research case requirements when necessary.
- Perform surgical hand scrubs per hospital policy.
- Use principles of aseptic technique in all tasks, including opening sterile supplies.
- Reprocess instruments as needed.
- Assist with room cleanup, minimizing turnover time.
- Perform autoclaving functions.
- Collaborate with OR team members, surgeons, and management to improve care delivery.
- Communicate problems and relevant information appropriately.
- Serve as a preceptor in collaboration with the Nurse Manager and Charge Nurse for orientation programs.
- Maintain compliance with hospital policies, confidentiality, quality improvement, safety, infection control, and environmental standards.
- Engage in professional growth through seminars, workshops, conferences, and journals.
- Meet annual competency and retraining requirements.
- Attend required meetings and perform additional duties such as CSP processing, stocking carts, and case setup.
Qualifications
High School Diploma or Equivalent required. Certification/Diploma in Surgical Technology is also required.
