Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Participate, under supervision, in the implementation of Operating Room nursing care and perform tasks related to both direct and indirect patient care.
• Collaborate with nursing staff, surgeons, anesthesiologists, and peri‑operative staff to facilitate safe and expeditious patient care.
• Be a team player to facilitate safe patient care and demonstrate competence in job tasks.
• Maintain sterile technique and support surgical counts and aseptic practice.
• Support orthopedic scrub responsibilities and ensure readiness of instruments and equipment.

Job Description

The Surgical Technician assists in the preparation, processing, care, and maintenance of instruments, supplies, and equipment, and functions as a member of the surgical team during operative procedures. This role may also serve in a specialty service and utilizes and troubleshoots equipment and service implementation.

The individual must know aseptic technique and be able to scrub independently in orthopedic procedures, anticipating the needs of the surgeon, and have knowledge in the sequencing of the surgical procedures.

Responsibilities

• Participate, under supervision, in the implementation of Operating Room Nursing Care and perform tasks related to both direct and indirect care of patients in the O.R.
• Collaborate with nursing staff, surgeons, anesthesiologists, and all peri‑operative staff to facilitate patient care in a safe and expeditious manner.
• Be a team player and work to facilitate safe patient care.
• Demonstrate competence in performing job tasks.
• Orthopaedic Scrub Experience is required; Exemplary customer service is required.
• Comply with established policies and procedures related to work schedule.
• Develop plans that prescribe actions to achieve patient goals and prioritize tasks logically.
• Coordinate patient care needs with team members and departments, ensuring the availability of supplies and equipment.
• Position patients appropriately for surgery, maintain correct anatomical positions, and provide supports, padding, and restraints as needed.
• Maintain awareness of anesthesia administration responsibilities, identify hazards, and execute safety and emergency procedures.
• Keep current with CPR certification and safety protocols.
• Demonstrate knowledge of sterilization methods and safe operation of sterilizers.
• Perform surgical hand scrub, sterile gowning and gloving.
• Create and maintain sterile field, inspecting items for contamination and controlling movement within the field.
• Provide equipment and supplies based on patient needs, ensuring functionality and coordination with circulating nurse.
• Perform counts according to established policies and initiate corrective actions.
• Monitor and control environmental factors (temperature, humidity, warming devices).
• Respect patient rights, maintain privacy, and provide for cultural beliefs.
• Demonstrate accountability, exercise safe judgment, and support cost containment.
• Participate in quality of care endeavors and National Patient Safety Goals.
• Participate in staff training and development, precepting new staff, and providing feedback.
• Perform duties as assigned.

Specialty Service Role

• Review specialty service schedule with Clinical Supervisor to assess equipment and staffing needs.
• Demonstrate knowledge of specialty anatomy and physiology.
• Utilize and troubleshoot service instrumentation and equipment.
• Coordinate with Biomedical technicians for equipment maintenance.
• Assist Clinical Supervisor and CNIII with service-related activities.
• Communicate patient information confidentially.

Qualifications
