About the Unit

The Braselton Labor & Delivery unit consists of 10 labor/delivery/recovery beds, 2 triage beds, 2 operating rooms, and 2 PACU bays. The unit provides care to women and infants for a variety of services including laboring patients, scheduled inductions, scheduled Cesarean sections, obstetrical emergencies, intrauterine fetal demise/miscarriage, and well newborn care.

Job Summary

The Surgical Technologist performs a wide variety of support services for the department. Responsibilities include maintaining patient records, managing unit supplies and equipment, facilitating communication, performing patient care for adults and newborns, functioning as a scrub nurse in Labor & Delivery operating rooms, and serving as a combination of nursing assistant and unit secretary. The role is under the direction of a registered professional nurse and follows national patient safety goals.

Essential Tasks and Responsibilities
  • Functions as scrub person in the Labor and Delivery Operating Rooms and performs cases in accordance with hospital protocols, including instrumentation setup, sponge/needle/instrument counts, and room cleanup.
  • Maintains a safe and aseptic environment in the L&D surgical suite and the L&D area, monitoring equipment, infection control procedures, and hazardous conditions.
  • Contributes to departmental productivity by expediting OR changeovers, restocking supplies, and serving as a QA&I monitor and committee participant.
  • Assists nursing staff with patient care tasks such as patient greeting, vital sign collection, monitoring, and infant care during delivery.
  • Performs additional duties including record filing, ADT status changes, and maintaining clinical skills through laboratory and in‑service training.

  • Supports administrative functions: confirms patient visits, verifies charges, enters billing information, compiles statistics, and maintains charting materials.
  • Assists in daily operations by maintaining supplies, evaluating new products, and monitoring medication needs in C/S and epidural rooms.
