Job Summary

Site: Newton‑Wellesley Hospital, Mass General Brigham. This position requires 36 hours per week in nights (3x12 hr shifts, 7pm‑7:30am, weekend and holiday rotations). Responsibilities include assisting in operating room operations under supervision, setting up the operating room, preparing and transporting patients for surgery, adjusting lights and equipment, passing instruments and supplies, holding retractors, cutting sutures, and counting sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments. The role may also provide day‑to‑day guidance to more junior staff.

Does this position require Patient Care? Yes.

Essential Functions

• Participates in time‑out procedures.
• Attounts for extra supplies and equipment as needed.
• Sets up equipment independently.
• Participates as an active member of the Patient Care Team.
• Monitors and continually assesses operating room conditions, including patient and surgical team needs.
• Prepares patients for surgery, including positioning patients on the operating table and covering them with sterile surgical drapes to prevent exposure.
• Knowledge of SPD sterile room.

Qualifications

Education – High School Diploma or Equivalent required. This role does not accept experience in lieu of a degree.

Licenses and Credentials – Basic Life Support (BLS) – Generic – HR Only preferred. Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) – National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) preferred. Medical Technician (New Hampshire License) – New Hampshire Board of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy preferred.

Experience – At time of hire: Three (3) years of diversified experience in the operating/procedure room; 3‑5 years required and experience scrubbing in multiple specialties 5 years preferred; 1 year of experience working and leading teams; 3‑5 years preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities – Knowledge of SPD sterile room; ability to multitask and work in a fast‑paced clinical environment; advanced knowledge of sterile processing procedures and policies; familiarity with medical terminology and departmental supply items.
