Job summary

UNC Health Johnston Health is accepting applications for a Surgical Technologist I. The role supports the operating room team, maintains sterile technique, handles instruments, and assists surgeons and nurses during invasive procedures in a fast-paced setting.

The position requires 0-3 years of experience and Basic Life Support certification. Work is performed onsite in Smithfield, NC with a 40-hour work week and variable schedule.

Qualifications

• Successful completion of service specific portion of the UNC Health Surgical Technologist competencies.
• Strong communication skills/customer service relations.
• Excellent organizational/priority setting skill.

Responsibilities

• Performs technical skill duties in all operating room specialty service areas, ensuring proper practices.
• Maintains, assembles, handles, and sterilizes instruments.
• Follows aseptic technique and reports discrepancies.
• Performs surgical counts and documents any discrepancies.
• Labels drugs and solutions; monitors quantities used.
• Assists in preparation and labeling of specimens.
• Plans and sets up instruments, supplies, and drapes for procedures.
• Assists the surgeon, understanding anatomy and procedure implications.
• Assists in case selection and instrument planning.
• Adapts scrubbing procedures as needed and communicates with the team.
• Participates in inventory and restocking of supplies.
• Identifies defective instruments and coordinates restocking.
• Assists RN during intraoperative nursing activities.
• Operates complex equipment and troubleshoots as needed.
• Mentors trainees and serves as a preceptor when required.
