Job summary

Qualifications

• Graduate surgical technician waiting to take certification exam; must obtain certification within 6 months of hire.
• Surgical Technologist I independently scrubs basic surgical procedures.
• If career ladder is implemented, Surgical Technologist I must complete skills/practice defined for a Surgical Technologist I.
• Operating room competency must be maintained.
• Manual dexterity and mechanical skills needed to properly use and hold surgical instruments.
• MyMichigan Health is a technology driven organization and employees need to demonstrate competency in Microsoft Windows.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrates knowledge of surgical procedures and problem solve in relation to the procedure being performed.
• Verifies items on the physician preference card and accounts for supplies so that accurate patient charges are billed.
• Demonstrates proper use of equipment, assembling of equipment, disposables, and cleaning and sterilizing; ensures all equipment and instruments are ready.
• Maintains the sterile environment and monitors the sterile field for breaks in technique.
• Sets up sterile field with instruments and keeps accurate records of medications, sponges, instruments and sharps per policy.
• Participates in regulatory surveys and performance improvement activities.
• Attends orientation and ongoing competencies and staff development.
• Stays current on regulations and professional standards of care by reading journals and attending seminars.
• Fulfils on-call responsibilities and extra shift coverage as needed.
• Other duties as assigned.
