Job description

Job Summary

Geisinger is proud to offer a Surgical Technologist position with benefits including a $7500 hiring incentive for eligible candidates, a starting salary of $24.75 with increased rates for experienced individuals, up to $5/hr shift differential for evening, night, and weekend shifts, and up to $40,000 in financial support to become a nurse.

Job Duties
  1. Assist surgeons with procedures related to patient care during surgery.
  2. Coordinate treatments with other disciplines.
  3. Provide basic patient assistance.
  4. Connect patients to clinical equipment as needed.
  5. Practice aseptic techniques during surgical preparation, including scrubbing, gowning, gloving, draping, and setting up instruments.
  6. Participate in surgical time, out, and operating room briefings according to protocol.
  7. Verify the correct surgical site with the circulating nurse and surgeon before incision.
  8. Maintain an accurate account of supplies, including sponges, needles, and instruments.
  9. Verify counts at the end of procedures.
  10. Prepare, identify, and verify surgical specimens.
  11. Dispose of linens, needles, and sharps properly.
  12. Assess wounds and apply or change sterile dressings as instructed.
  13. Maintain and document universal precautions.
  14. Initiate emergency procedures when necessary.
  15. Participate in patient admission and discharge processes.
  16. Perform billing for services and equipment as appropriate.
  17. Participate in on-call rotations.
  18. Serve as a preceptor for students in the surgical unit.
  19. Adhere to policies, protocols, and standards of care.
  20. Perform quality control monitoring.
  21. Perform additional duties such as specimen collection, set up for pleure-vac and traction, patient transport, and post-mortem care.
  22. Ensure all medications and solutions are labeled under RN supervision.
Work Environment & Responsibilities

Work is primarily performed in a clinical setting. Employees are responsible for meeting job obligations and complying with organizational policies. Additional department-specific skills may be required.

Position Details
  • Full-time, day/evening shifts (36 hours/week)
  • Three 12-hour shifts from 7 am to 7:30 pm
  • Every other weekend and holiday rotation required
