Job summary

Job description

Summary

Reporting to and working collaboratively with the Service Line Leader, performs a variety of duties in the operating room to assist the surgical team in becoming more efficient for that specific service line. Acts as the designated lead to help facilitate service line operations when the Service Line Lead is not available.

Responsibilities
  • Assists in preparing operating rooms for surgical procedures, ensuring that all necessary instruments, equipment, and supplies are available and properly stored.
  • Is a clinical resource for onboarding new employees, including nurses, surgical technologists, and contracted labor in the scrub role and validating their skills. Aligns staff competencies to case complexity.
  • Serves as dedicated liaison to the Sterile Processing Department (SPD). Works collaboratively with SPD on tray optimization, maintaining tray location, availability and weight limitations, conversion from trays to rigid containers, establishing universal naming for like trays, daily validation of case cart completeness, building new instrument trays, and ensuring tray availability/timeliness from vendors.
  • Is a content expert who is available to scrub the spectrum of surgical cases within the scope of the service line when needed to augment staffing and maintain clinical competence.
  • Assists in removing unused supplies from the surgery cart and stores them in the appropriate area for use, stocks surgical supplies in operating rooms and storage areas.
  • Performs other duties as designated by Service Line Leader.
  • Has authority to work with Clinical Managers in the absence of the Service Line Lead to facilitate case placement to maintain flow.
  • Assists the service line leader in the review and maintenance of preference cards.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Meets the requirements of a Surgical Technologist.
  • Extensive knowledge in orthopedic surgery including orthopedic trauma, oncology, and spine surgery.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience as a Surgical Technologist from an academic, Level One Trauma Center; and at least 2 years of work history in the specialty.
  • Knowledge of various surgical equipment and aseptic techniques; ability to operate sterilization equipment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills to provide care to patients throughout the life span, considering aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns.
  • High School Diploma or GED required; must also complete one of: graduate of accredited surgical technologist program, graduate of surgical technologist associate degree program, current certification as a CST, current NCCT-TC (tech in surgery) certification (for applicants with past military experience only; military experience as a surgical technologist will be strongly considered), or 3 years of experience within the past 5 years as a surgical technologist.
  • Current BLS Certification required upon hire.
  • Work requirements in a sterile environment; physical ability to assist in lifting and positioning of patients and to stand for extended periods during surgical procedures.
  • In the absence of the Service Line Lead, may temporarily perform supervisory responsibilities.

Pay Range: $32.56 - $53.71 per hour
