Assists in preparing operating rooms for surgical procedures, ensuring that all necessary instruments, equipment and supplies are available and properly stored. Assists nursing personnel and orderlies in lifting and positioning patients for surgical procedures. Scrubs on all types of surgical procedures and passes in instruments, sutures and sponges; assists in holding retractor and suctioning patients and anticipates needs of the physician. Responsible for maintaining strict aseptic techniques in the operating room area, reporting and correcting any “breaks” in such techniques. Cleans surgical instruments and equipment after surgical procedures by operating sterilization equipment (i.e. autoclaves and ultrasonic) and wrapping and storing such equipment and instruments after they are cleaned. Removes soiled linen and supplies from the operating room after surgical procedures and assists in the general cleaning of the area. Obtains clean linen and supplies and sets up room for next procedure. Obtains special equipment and supplies from the appropriate storage areas. Removes unused supplies from the surgery cart and stores them in the appropriate area for use. Stocks surgical supplies in the operating rooms and storage areas and performs other duties as assigned.
Required to work in a sterile environment and regularly exposed to cuts and punctures from surgical instruments and equipment, burns from autoclaves, anesthesia gases, as well as odors and communicable diseases from patients. Physical ability to assist in lifting and positioning of patients and to stand for extended periods of time during surgical procedures.
