Job summary

The Miriam Hospital, Providence, RI, part of Brown University Health, is seeking a Surgical Technologist to support the operating room under the supervision of a Professional Nurse. You will help position patients, scrub, prepare and clean instruments, and restock supplies, while maintaining strict confidentiality and patient-centered care.

You will sustain aseptic technique, assist with instrument counts, and ensure equipment readiness.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program or CST/NCCT-TC certification.
  • 3 years of experience as a surgical technologist in the past 5 years.
  • Successful completion of Brown University Health on-the-job surgical technologist training program.
  • Current BLS Certification required upon hire.
  • Ability to provide care to patients across the life span with aging and cultural considerations.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare the operating room with anticipated supplies and equipment.
  • Scrub on procedures; pass instruments, sponges, and sutures; assist suctioning and retractors.
  • Maintain aseptic technique and a safe patient environment.
  • Check equipment and instruments for proper function before procedures.
  • Demonstrate competence in handling specimens and follow specimen procedures.
  • Perform accurate surgical counts and maintain sterile instrument tables.
  • Assist in positioning patients and preparing rooms between cases.
  • Sterilize and prepare instruments and equipment; document medications used.
  • Transport patients as needed and participate in quality improvement activities.

Job description

Overview

Summary: Under the general supervision of the Professional Nurse, provide direct patient care to the surgical patient. Assist the surgical team with positioning patients, scrubbing, preparing and cleaning instruments, and restocking of supplies. Maintain patient confidentiality and foster patient- and family-centered care in accordance with the Brown University Health mission, vision, and values and the philosophy of nursing at The Miriam Hospital, with consideration of the life span and cultural patterns.

Perform all essential duties with attention to the age-specific needs of geriatric, adult, and adolescent patients.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare the operating room in a timely manner with anticipated supplies, instruments, and equipment.
  • Scrub on a variety of surgical procedures; anticipate surgeon needs, pass instruments, sponges, and sutures; assist in suctioning, holding retractors, and cutting sutures as needed.
  • Maintain strict aseptic technique and a safe environment for patients and staff.
  • Check all equipment and instruments for proper functioning prior to each procedure.
  • Demonstrate competence in care of specimens and follow procedures for handling specimens.
  • Accurately perform surgical counts according to policy; be aware of the numbers and kinds of packs/sponges/instruments in a surgical site.
  • Maintain an orderly sterile instrument table according to hospital standards to facilitate efficiency.
  • Assist in positioning of patients according to department procedure.
  • Clean and prepare rooms between cases and after the last case; restock as needed.
  • Clean and prepare instruments and equipment for sterilization.
  • Keep accurate records of medications and solutions used during a procedure.
  • May transport patients to and from patient units, operating room, and PACUs.
  • Participate in hospital/department quality improvement activities.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
  • Adhere to age-specific care considerations for geriatric, adult, and adolescent patients and uphold patient- and family-centered care.
Minimum Qualifications

BASIC KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma or GED required. Completion of at least one of the following options: Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program, or surgical technologist associate degree program, or current CST certification, or current NCCT-TC (tech in surgery) certification (military experience considered), or 3 years of experience as a surgical technologist in the past 5 years. Successful completion of Brown University Health on-the-job surgical technologist training program. Current BLS Certification required upon hire. Demonstrated knowledge and skills to provide care to patients across the life span with consideration of aging processes, development, and cultural patterns.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $28.12-$46.39
